Avengers: Doomsday is a film that many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are excited to watch when it releases on May 1, 2026. Marvel Studios is being extremely careful not to reveal any information regarding the film, including the confirmed cast. Outside of Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of Doctor Doom, Marvel Studios hasn’t officially revealed who will be involved. Anthony Mackie has self-confirmed his appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, and he has also teased how big of a role his character will have.
One of the biggest questions fans have heading into this movie is what the current Avengers lineup actually looks like. The group expanded from the original 2012 movie, but there were always clear definitions of who was and wasn’t involved. Those lines were blurred in Avengers: Endgame when all of Marvel’s heroes came together to battle Thanos. However, that is something that Mackie is going to change in Avengers: Doomsday.

RUMOR: Avengers: Doomsday Filming Delayed For What May Be A Troubling Reason
Avengers: Doomsday filming is set to be delayed, due to a troubling situation.
During an interview with Deadline, the new Captain America revealed, “I don’t know how many are coming back. RDJ [Robert Downey Jr.] made the big announcement that he’s coming back. Other than him I don’t know who of the original crew will be coming back, but I know he will be.” He then added, “I’m the OG now. I’m the only guy,” he chuckles. “I’m the Avenger from the old group that brings in the new group. So it’ll be a changing of the guard. As you see in the new trailer, Ross is like, ‘I want you to start up The Avengers.’ So, I have to figure out who’s going to be the new Avengers. That’s the perk of being Captain America. I get to pick who I want to hang out with.”
It’s a massive revelation as Mackie has seemingly confirmed that Sam Wilson will be the Avengers leader. Wilson took on the mantle of Captain America from Steve Rogers the last time the Avengers were all together, and it appears he will continue in a leadership role. Of course, Iron Man is no longer available as an option to be in the group, nor is Black Widow, but there are plenty of original Avengers who could return to the franchise to fight against the evil that Doctor Doom will bring.
However, Avengers: Doomsday is set to bring an element of change, too, which Mackie himself teased. This means there could be brand new characters who haven’t been shown as Avengers before joining the group. It was recently reported that Shuri will be in Avengers: Doomsday, and that could be the perfect example of a fresh character to be part of Wilson’s version of the Avengers.
There’s an opportunity to create some tension with other old-school characters not being the leader either, which could be fun. However, determining who is officially an Avenger is important for Marvel Studios. It creates clear boundaries between the characters and allows audiences to understand who they can expect to see whenever an Avengers movie takes place. So, while it might be a surprise in Avengers: Doomsday, that should benefit the franchise moving forward.
