Why Wizards of the Coast Should Avoid Baldur’s Gate 3’s Companions in Future D&D Content
Despite their overwhelming popularity, Wizards of the Coast has good reason to ditch Baldur’s Gate 3’s companions in most D&D media going forward.
Now, GameSpot has reported that the AAA project which was being developed by Skeleton Key was canceled. The discovery was made via a LinkedIn post made by Skeleton Key’s audio director, Nassim Ait-Kaci. According to Ait-Kaci, he was looking for a new role after the “unfortunate cancellation” of the unnamed project. At the time of this report, Wizards of the Coast had not officially confirmed the cancellation of the game, though.
Wizards of the Coast Cancels Project Led By BioWare Veteran
This is not the first time Wizards of the Coast canceled unannounced games in recent years. Back in 2023, Wizards of the Coast canceled five unannounced titles. At the time, it was revealed that 15 employees were laid off.
Fortunately, this latest cancelation does not necessarily mean that Wizards of the Coast is not developing any new games. Reports from 2024 indicated that Wizards of the Coast’s owner Hasbro still has more Dungeons and Dragons video games planned following the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s not known, however, what these games are.
In any case, Wizards of the Coast’s biggest focus in 2025 remains on Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons. A few months ago, WotC teased its 2025 plans for Dungeons and Dragons, starting with D&D’s 2025 Monster Manual, which has recently been released. Later in the year, the company will release other books such as a new Starter Set, which will be focused on a remake of the popular The Keep on the Borderlands adventure, and settings such as the Forgotten Realms will receive an official player’s guide.
