When an online game has been around for a decade or more, it often evolves into something new. Overwatch became Overwatch 2, OSRS split off from RuneScape, and even Destiny eventually got a sequel. Valve’s Team Fortress 2 is no different. Made free-to-play in 2011 and smothered in updates since then, it’s still one of the biggest games on Steam despite being very different from its original form. Now, the longstanding TF2 Classic mod is finally coming to Valve’s platform, and it offers entirely new ways to play.

Developed by the team at Eminoma, Team Fortress 2 Classic was formally launched in 2020. The mod aims to reimagine and support the FPS game’s post-launch era – we’re talking 2008 to 2009 – with scrapped content, entirely new ideas, and plenty of quality-of-life changes. Eminoma has even been updating TF2 Classic as recently as this year, with new game modes, weapons, and more to keep you coming back. It’s a testament to the longstanding love for Team Fortress 2, and now it’s coming to Steam.

As for what TF2 Classic contains, Eminoma divides it up into “new-old” and “new-new” features. As for the former, you’ve got the Civilian, a new special class based on Team Fortress Classic’s character of the same name. You can also wield some pre-release-inspired weapons like the Nailgun, Dynamite Pack, and Tranquilizer gun. Each is redesigned to blend right in with the old-school experience, so it’ll feel properly official. There are even four-team matches, with the GRN (green) and YLW (yellow) squads also available.

It’s not just revamped old Team Fortress 2 content, though, as Eminoma has plenty of new stuff to play with. There are extra game modes like Domination, Territorial Domination, and VIP Race, alongside extensive modding support and visual enhancements. There are even more mechanics and weapons too, with bricks, chains, flak cannons, and even jump pads available. It’s more TF2, which is never a bad thing.

Eminoma currently has Team Fortress 2 Classic listed for a Steam launch sometime in 2025, but the mod has also been available elsewhere for some time. You can wishlist the game on Valve’s platform here, or download it from the team’s website here.

We’ve also got all the best multiplayer games and free Steam games you can play today, if TF2 Classic’s Steam launch feels too far away.
