The Heaviest Weapons In Dark Souls 3

The Heaviest Weapons In Dark Souls 3

Summary

  • Dark Souls 3 has remained popular for nearly a decade, thanks to its diverse builds and weapon variety, with colossal weapons being a favorite among fans.
  • Players can wield ultra-heavy weapons like the Dragonslayer Greataxe or Morne’s Great Hammer for massive damage, but these require a high Strength stat and plenty of Stamina.
  • Ledo’s Great Hammer, the heaviest weapon introduced in The Ringed City DLC, boasts absurd requirements and unparalleled weight, alongside impressive damage.

Despite nearing a decade since its release, Dark Souls 3 remains a standout in the Soulslike genre. It’s arguably the closest game to FromSoftware’s smash hit, Elden Ring, in terms of mechanics, world design, as well as enemy and weapon variety. This probably explains why Dark Souls 3 remains popular and constantly played by thousands of Soulslike players, both veterans and newcomers alike.

Over the years, players have had ample opportunity to wield most of Dark Souls 3’s arsenal, including its array of colossal weapons like great hammers, greataxes, and ultra greatswords. These are some of the heaviest and most oversized weapons the game has to offer, which come with their own caveats. Not only can such comically huge weapons block the player’s view, but serious dedication is needed to fully embrace them due to their hefty Strength requirements and high Stamina consumption.

Dark Souls 3: All Fists And Claws, Ranked

Fists and Claws are rather uncommon melee choices in Dark Souls 3, yet they offer unique strengths and special benefits for those who master them.

Below we’ll rank the heaviest weapons available in Dark Souls 3 and its two DLCs, Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City, based solely on their weight. Note that this ranking focuses purely on each weapon’s size, mass, and requirements, rather than their specifics, abilities, or combat skills.

8

Greatsword

Weight: 20.0

Dark Souls 3 Greatsword
  • Strength requirement: 28 STR
  • Two-handed: 19 STR

Now, this one’s a pure FromSoftware lie. Despite being called a Greatsword, it’s actually an Ultra Greatsword and has nothing to do with any average-sized, stylish Greatswords—one of the most popular weapon categories in Dark Souls 3. In fact, this thing is too big to even be called a sword; it’s more like a thick, sharpened rail that the character somehow manages to hold by its tiny handle.

One of the heaviest of its kind, the Greatsword’s in-game description suggests that it was created as a test of the true limits of human strength. However, that’s probably just another lie, considering its Strength requirement is surprisingly modest compared to the sword’s massive weight.

Where to find the Greatsword:

The Greatsword is looted from a corpse on top of a broken bridge in Farron Keep. Given how satisfying it is to swing this mega-sword at enemies, at least its last wielder probably died happy.

7

Dragonslayer Greataxe

Weight: 20.0

Dark Souls 3 Dragonslayer Greataxe
  • Strength requirement: 40 STR
  • Two-handed: 27 STR

The gorgeous Dragonslayer Greataxe has a weight comparable to the Greatsword but is much more balanced in its design, featuring a melted iron aesthetic, modest proportions, and even a seemingly comfortable handle. When properly upgraded, it delivers absurd amounts of lightning damage with each swing and is powerful enough for devastating critical hits.

According to many fans, the Dragonslayer Greataxe is the undisputed number-one weapon for PvE in Dark Souls 3, thanks to its devastating lightning damage and a skill that melts just about every boss the game can throw at players — yes, even the Nameless King.

Overwhelmed by the selection of greatswords in Dark Souls 3? Here are the best that players should keep an eye out for.

How to get the Dragonslayer Greataxe:

As a boss weapon, it can be transposed from the Soul of the Dragonslayer Armour, dropped by the boss encountered in Lothric Castle near the Dragon Barracks bonfire.

6

Dragon Tooth

Weight: 21.0

Dark Souls 3 Dragon Tooth
  • Strength requirement: 40 STR
  • Two-handed: 27 STR

Now, what do we have here? Wielding an everlasting Dragon Tooth that will never break is reason enough to give this weapon a shot. Its connection to the legendary NPC Havel the Rock only adds to its appeal. After all, who wouldn’t want to play Dark Souls 3 as The Rock?

That said, the design is a bit odd when examined more closely. Why is the weapon an inverted dragon tooth, hitting enemies with its root rather than the sharp end? A mystery. On the bright side, simply equipping this great hammer grants additional Magic and Fire damage absorption, and its Strength requirement is surprisingly reasonable.

How to get the Dragon Tooth:

The Dragon Tooth is dropped by the Havel Knight found in a secret area of Archdragon Peak.

5

Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords

Weight: 22.5

Dark Souls 3 Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords
  • Strength requirement: 40 STR
  • Two-handed: 27 STR

Oof, what a thing of beauty. The only paired weapon of its category introduced in The Ringed City DLC, the Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords is also one of the two heaviest new weapons from the game’s expansions. With their unmistakably menacing design (believed to be forged in the Abyss), these two sweet swords are as unique as they are powerful in Dark Souls 3.

The fun thing about these ultra greatswords? Wielding one in each hand somehow magically requires less Strength from the wielder. Physics and body balancing at its finest, apparently.

4

Smough’s Great Hammer

Weight: 24.0

Dark Souls 3 Smough's Great Hammer
  • Strength requirement: 45 STR
  • Two-handed: 30 STR

Executioner Smough’s legendary great hammer returns in Dark Souls 3, and it’s just as huge and twisted as fans remember. This giant drum on an absurdly thin handle looks and sounds so ridiculous that it alone might convince some players to give it a shot. Be warned, though: one of this weapon’s prime “perks” is that players can’t see a thing while using it.

Smough’s Great Hammer is said to restore HP with each hit, but don’t be fooled. Even under perfect conditions with the best gear, the amount of HP restored is negligible, so there’s no hope for a proper life-leeching build—it’s just not happening.

Where to find Smough’s Great Hammer:

Found in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, inside a chest on the second floor of the building with the paintings. Unfortunately for those who miss Ornstein and Smough, no dual-boss fight is involved.

3

Morne’s Great Hammer

Weight: 24.0

Dark Souls 3 Morne's Great Hammer
  • Strength requirement: 50 STR
  • Two-handed: 34 STR

This great hammer’s ornate, decorated design makes it look more like a museum piece than a practical weapon—but we’re not complaining. What’s even more questionable than its design are its requirements. Aimed at Strength and Faith hybrid characters, this colossal yet beautiful weapon won’t suit pure Strength builds, which severely limits its appeal in Dark Souls 3.

Interestingly, despite having a weight comparable to Smough’s Great Hammer, Morne’s Great Hammer doesn’t look nearly as heavy or bulky. There’s definitely some Paladin magic at play here.

2

Fume Ultra Greatsword

Weight: 25.5

Dark Souls 3 Fume Ultra Greatsword
  • Strength requirement: 50 STR
  • Two-handed: 34 STR

Before the DLC, the Fume Ultra Greatsword was the heaviest, most colossal weapon in Dark Souls 3, though its Strength requirements are comparable to Morne’s Great Hammer. It was said to be so heavy that no one could claim it, eventually becoming a forgotten and abandoned relic. After The Ringed City DLC, however, it was bumped down to second place.

This twisted sword is notably larger and seemingly much more cumbersome than any other Ultra Greatsword in the game. Even with all the gut-wrenching damage nerfs, landing a successful (and extremely slow) blow with it is still deeply satisfying.

How to get the Fume Ultra Greatsword:

Dropped by Knight Slayer Tsorig, found underneath the Smoldering Lake.

1

Ledo’s Great Hammer

Weight: 28.0

Dark Souls 3 Ledo's Great Hammer
  • Strength requirement: 60 STR
  • Two-handed: 40 STR

Here it is—the largest and heaviest of them all. Introduced in The Ringed City DLC, Ledo’s Great Hammer was undoubtedly designed to surpass Smough’s and Morne’s Great Hammers in sheer weight—and to block even more of the player’s view in Dark Souls 3.

With its ridiculous Strength and Stamina requirements, two-handing this hammer takes as much Strength as one-handing half of the other colossal weapons listed above. And don’t even think about dual-wielding two of them. Seriously, just don’t.
