A Stardew Valley player has shared an impressive achievement, making it to the final floor of the mines without upgrading their pickaxe. Their effort is both impressing and confusing the Stardew Valley community at large.
Stardew Valley‘s mines and caverns are dangerous, yet lucrative, locations to visit. Players can potentially dig up all kinds of gems and minerals to fuel their crafting back at their home, or to simply sell for a profit. In general, players want every advantage they can get when mining in Stardew Valley, so players tend to be sure to get as many upgrades as they can, carry good food, and ensure that they have a solid weapon to defend themselves. However, this player neglected one of those steps.

A talented Stardew Valley fan shares a look at their isometric animation of Leah’s Cottage, giving fans a new perspective on the farming sim.
On Reddit, Dancingcakes2 shared their achievement of getting to the very last floor of the Stardew Valley mines without ever upgrading their pickaxe. An image shows them on floor 120 standing next to the final chest of the mines, now opened, with the starter pickaxe selected in their inventory. It’s an impressive feat, as the starter pickaxe takes considerably more strikes to break through the majority of rocks in the game than the upgraded versions. This not only means it would take longer to get through the mines, but the player will end up using more energy doing so.
Stardew Valley Players in Disbelief Over Mining Achievement
While several fellow farmers were impressed by this fan’s hard work, many more seemed to be stupefied by it. Dancingcakes2 was asked why they didn’t have Clint upgrade their pickaxe, to which they explained that they had put it off because they were saving money for something else, and that it wasn’t necessary for them to do it to get to the bottom. It wasn’t the only act of thriftiness the player exhibited, as they also noted that the weapons they used to get through the mines were all dropped from enemies or chests that they found along the way.
Since Stardew Valley largely lets players do what they want, self-imposed challenges like this one are fairly common, especially among experienced players. No two players enjoy the game in exactly the same way. Some players hardly access the mines at all, choosing to instead focus primarily on their farms, befriending Stardew Valley‘s citizens, or something else. Others enjoy the mining experience so much that they challenge themselves to descend as many floors as possible in the Skull Caverns. While not every player will understand this farmer’s choice, fans can appreciate the ability to choose what they want to do – and how they go about it – in Stardew Valley.
