Ultrakill is easily one of the greatest boomer shooters on Steam. The fast-paced, incredibly violent FPS isn’t even out of early access yet, and it already has an eyewatering 132,000 user reviews sitting at a staggering 97% positive rating. That’s a feat most games can only dream of. Now, after almost a year of work, the game looks and plays better than ever thanks to a big free update.

In Ultrakill, mankind has gone extinct, and all that remains are machines fuelled by blood. But the world is running out of this finite resource, so the automatons are turning to somewhere much more dangerous: Hell itself. You step into the metallic plates of V1, and must venture into the depths to find what you need. With fast-paced and gorey action blending Quake and Doom into one over-the-top package, Ultrakill is all about mastering movement and turning your enemies into a fine mist, and it just got better.

Despite the FPS game still being in Steam Early Access, the new ULTRA_REVAMP update completely changes the entire experience. The overall performance has improved alongside the visuals of every level. Assets have more detail, light plays more of a role in the set design, and everything just looks crisper than ever before.

Not only that, but Ultrakill now has two Encore levels. These are much harder variants of levels from the campaign, and will push your movement and shooting skills to the absolute limit. “They don’t look anything like the levels they’re based on, they don’t play anything like the levels they’re based on, and they’re about ten times harder than the levels they’re based on,” the team writes. You can expect the rest of the Encore levels to come after the full launch, for free.

Once the dust has settled on this revamp update, you can expect Layer 8: Fraud (a new level) to be added to the game, followed by what the team calls “the grand finale” and “the encore.”

Ultrakill’s free revamp is available now, right as the boomer shooter is also 33% off. You can expect to pay $16.74 / £14.06 until Monday March 3. You can learn more here.
