Summary
- Companions in Avowed can be incredibly useful in battle and exploration.
- Garryck, while helpful at first, is fairly useless in the long run.
- Characters like Marius and Giatta excel in combat and support roles, making them valuable companions.
While you have four main companions in Avowed, slowly collected through the game, they are by no means your only companions (at least, if you count the temporary one – Garryck). Acting as both guides throughout the Living Lands and your hot spot for all things lore related, companions can prove themselves to be incredibly useful.
The majority of your companions are oriented to help you out in battle, making your life just that little bit easier while exploring or encountering the various bosses that dot the landscape of the Living Lands. Some of your companions, however, are more useful and enjoyable than others.

Garryck
First And The Worst
Look, we can appreciate that Garryck hauled the Envoy off of the ship and saved them from an untimely watery death before they even reached the Living Lands. However, he’s pretty quick to abandon the Evony and head off on their own as soon as you dock in Paradis – despite all his warnings about how you need to watch your back and stay safe in Paradis.
Sure, he begins to introduce you to the different companion mechanics, but he is, by and large, fairly useless as anything other than a tutorial companion. Depending on the choices that you make, there’s also a slight chance that he can die, which rules him out of being useful in the future.

Ilora
Aid For Aid
Ilora is a companion you can easily miss if you skip over her in the beginning area – but you should think twice before abandoning her. Ilora can prove to be a really useful asset during a later side quest, where she bargains for her group’s leader to listen to you and heed what you have to say.

In the beginning, however, she acts as your second companion, slinging spells and generally just trying to stay alive so she can reach her boat again. Opting to help her out also means that you can feel just a little bit better about yourself every time you see her around the Living Lands, even if she is mostly pretending that she doesn’t know you exist or who you are.

Kai
Enviornmental Hazard
Kai is the very first companion that you get to know, and he did, admittedly, do a lot to ensure that you would be safe after that first ‘event’ upon entering Paradis. When you’re battling alongside Kai, you learn that he uses a gun and, while he can be ranged, he generally prefers to get up in the enemy’s business (much to his detriment at times).
However, he’s a very useful companion to keep at hand while you’re exploring, given that one of his companion abilities sets parts of the terrain on fire, which burns away the dry and dead brambles. Unless you constantly want to keep a grimoire or spell on hand that can do the same thing, Kai’s pretty useful to have around.
3
Marius
Excels In Exploration
When you’re wandering the different areas in Avowed, you’ll want Marius situated right at your side as soon as you’re lucky enough to gain his favor. His special ability, when activated in the companion screen, will mark every single enemy, collectible, and treasure within his radius.
Outside of that, he’s fairly useful in combat, as he binds your enemies down with his Binding Roots ability and regularly inflicts bleed and high amounts of damage as he practically teleports around the battlefield. He’s useful both inside and outside of combat, which will probably make him on of the most constant companions to follow you wherever your whims may take you – plus he gives pretty decent advice, if a bit nihilistic at times.
2
Giatta
Support Supreme
Giatta, beloved, it is so good to finally have you on the team, because your support skills are so, so necessary to keep the rest of the party alive. You should definitely unlock her barrier ability really quickly, because it acts as additional health that keeps you alive for just that little bit longer – whether you’re ranged or melee.

She doesn’t necessarily make it easier to explore, but her healing abilities will come in handy more than a few times during boss battles or whenever you underestimate how high a drop really is. If you find yourself frequently reaching for your potions or the food you have cooked while wandering the Living Lands, then you should really opt to take Giatta with you everywhere.
1
Yatzli
The Wait Was Worth It
When you first meet Yatzli, you get the hint pretty quickly that, despite flirting with the Envoy, she’s more interested in discovering the hidden areas and treasures of the Living Lands, rather than discovering the hidden aspects of you. Her personality works really well with her abilities because she can dispel illusions – something that nobody else in the party, not even the Envoy, is capable of doing.
Yatzli isn’t just a necessity for when you’re exploring the Living Lands, but she also works as a really high DPS character, to the point where you might be reluctant to leave her at camp. She can stun enemies, deal area of effect damage, or target single enemies with ease, which makes her incredibly useful inside of combat.
