  • Clyde Phillips is building up Brian Moser’s world for future stories in the Dexter-verse.
  • Original Sin must tread carefully with Brian’s interactions to avoid upsetting the loyal fanbase.

Dexter: Original Sin has been a huge success for Paramount+ with Showtime, and a second season feels like an inevitability, despite not being officially announced yet. Fans were treated to an insight into Dexter’s early years with his brother, Brian Moser, prior to their mother’s death. In addition to this, Brian Moser made an appearance in the 90s timeline, and showrunner, Clyde Phillips, has promised more of the future Ice Truck Killer if a second season of Original Sin is picked up.

In Dexter: Original Sin season 1, it was discovered that Brian Moser was in and out of foster homes after witnessing Laura Moser’s brutal murder. In the 90s timeline, it was also revealed that he was the brutal serial killer that Harry Morgan and Maria LaGuerta were on the hunt for. However, Brian Moser remained on the run and his return was left open.

Brian Moser looms large over the first season of Original Sin, in both the 1970s flashbacks and the 90s timeline. When Dexter is out for lunch with new colleagues, Angel Batista and Vince Masuka, he is approached by Brian Moser, who asks if the seat has been taken. At this point, Dexter and the audience aren’t aware that this is his long-lost brother, but as the season progresses, it is confirmed that it was actually Brian, and he was trying to connect with Dexter. Brian Moser was developed even further as the first season progressed which hinted strongly at future stories featuring the character. In an interview with comicbook.com, Clyde Phillips confirmed that Brian Moser is firmly in his plans if Original Sin is picked up for another season:

Yes. He’s such a powerful presence and so important to Dexter’s life. You know, he becomes the Ice Truck Killer. I don’t know if you caught the Easter eggs, the whole show is an Easter egg hunt. We have so much fun. You know, sometimes we’ll have the whole scene written, and then we’ll think, well, wait a minute, let’s paint Laura Moser’s fingernails. There’s another one that’s even more hidden that’s very subtle. When Brian’s playing bingo with Barb, he’s got his daubers, those marker things are all lined up like Laura’s fingernails.

Dexter Morgan

Brian Moser’s return looks inevitable after Clyde Phillips’ recent comments, but a Dexter: Original Sin spin-off also shouldn’t be ruled out, with so much to explore with the character. There are 15 years when Brian Moser is unaccounted for in the Dexter timeline. However, Brian doesn’t have any significant interactions with Dexter, which means a spin-off in the style of the upcoming Trinity Killer solo show might be a better fit for one of Dexter‘s best villains, the Ice Truck Killer.

Brian Moser’s World Is Being Built Up For Future Stories In The Dexter-verse

Clyde Phillips elaborated on the future plans for Brian Moser in the same interview with comicbook.com:

Brian is such a huge part of Dexter’s story and we’re building his world. Brian/Rudy became such a big part of his world, it’s a natural part of his backstory and is part of Harry’s backstory with Harry and his wife making that choice. We can’t adopt both of them. We have to separate them. That further traumatizes Brian and further explains why he became who he is, and those scenes are heartbreaking. The system didn’t help him at all. He was doomed.

Brian is a key part of Dexter and Harry Morgan’s backstory, but Original Sin needs to draw a very fine line to avoid deviating from the established narrative. It could be argued that the interactions between Harry and Brian were overstepping the mark, as this wasn’t a part of Dexter-lore. Any further interactions between the pair need to tread very lightly to avoid an uproar from the loyal fanbase. For instance, if it is revealed that Brian actually killed Harry, this would change everything and not necessarily for the better. Of course, Harry’s inevitable future death probably won’t be exactly what Dexter and Debra Morgan believed it was, but it wouldn’t work to have Brian Moser be the one to end his life. Surely, if he’d done this, he would have goaded Dexter with this information when they eventually reconnected in the very first season of the original Dexter series.
