Summary
- Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation reveals his Devil Fruit as a Mythical Zoan with immense power.
- Chapter 1140 shows Luffy battling Scopper Gaban, highlighting the need to improve Observation Haki.
- Luffy’s potential future power boost may involve mastering all 3 Haki types, which would be crucial for facing Imu.
Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation turns him into the mythical warrior of legend called Sun God Nika. This is due to the true nature of his Devil Fruit, which fans always believed to be just another Paramecia Type but was always a Mythical Zoan with some of the most powerful and nonsensical feats in One Piece. Ever since its reveal, the true extent of this Devil Fruit’s power has never been shown, as Luffy has easily defeated his opponents with it.
However, Chapter 1140 of the One Piece manga definitely threw a spanner in the works. At the current stage, the ability to transform Luffy into Nika is the greatest feat of power that fans have seen from any Devil Fruit, but this chapter shows that, despite this incredible ability, Luffy still has a long way to go. So, let’s take a look at why this is and what fans could expect from Luffy by the end of the franchise.

When Chapter 1139 ended, it confirmed a longstanding theory that fans had regarding the mysterious silhouette on Elbaf as well as the identity of the visitor that Crocus had in a cover story many chapters ago. There were many theories about who this could’ve been, but the overwhelming opinion before any confirmation was that it was the legendary left wing of Gol D. Roger; Scopper Gaban.
This ended up being true, but even more surprisingly, the chapter ended with Scopper wanting to take on Luffy in a fight since the latter wanted to take the key to free Loki. When the battle commenced, it was shown that age had not slowed Scopper down at all, since he was able to take on Luffy and Zoro at once for a brief time, and even had them on edge for the altercation. Although the fight was over before it even really began, Luffy knew that he needed to transform into Gear 5 right off the bat once he began to take Scopper seriously.
However, the fight itself, as well as many of the events leading to it, show that Luffy still has a long way to go, both in terms of fighting and otherwise. For one, it was revealed that Scopper was the only person in the entire country of Elbaf who was able to detect the strange Haki which was emanating from Shamrock and Gunko’s summoning circle. This shows that Scopper’s Observation Haki is second to none and may just be the best fans have seen in the series since no one else was able to pick up on this same strange Haki.
Even in the fight against Luffy and Zoro, it was implied that Scopper used Observation Haki, owing to the brief panel of a close-up of his face with a glint over his eye. In this, he likely also saw the future of where this fight would lead and decided to call off the battle right after. This shows a level of future-sight that is even better than what Shanks has been able to demonstrate, since Scopper likely saw a far greater length into the future.
If Elbaf is still safe by the time you decide to leave, come find me.
But why is this so important? As the series enters its Final Saga with the Elbaf arc, the enemies from now on will only get stronger, all leading up to Imu, who is definitely going to be the most powerful character in the setting. To combat this, Luffy needs to increase his strength through any means necessary. More than just punching and getting stronger with his Gear 5 transformation, he even needs to increase his potency with all types of Haki, especially Observation Haki.
In previous arcs, there was a special emphasis placed on Conqueror’s and Armament Haki, showing that Observation Haki needs a focus placed on it as well to be strong enough for the final battle. Luffy needs to hone every facet of his skill set if he is to take on Imu at the end of the series, and the strongest form of Observation Haki may be the most important piece to the puzzle that Luffy is yet to collect.

How Could Luffy Get A Further Power Boost?
Theories About How He Can Get Stronger
Currently, Gear 5 is the most powerful state that Luffy can access as it is the Awakened form of his Devil Fruit. However, it’s known that there is still a substantial amount of the story that is left to tell, so it’s clear that the enemies from here are only going to get stronger, so many fans believe that Luffy may get a final form that even surpasses Gear 5 in effectiveness.
However, this is unlikely and would be detrimental to the overall story if it does end up happening, since the entire legend of the One Piece story is predicated and set into motion by the actions of the original Nika and Joyboy, who both used the Gear 5 state in their times. As such, the most likely scenario of how Luffy can get stronger is through the mastered form of all 3 Haki types which he would use while in his Gear 5 form.
