Summary
- James Gunn has said a DC version of Marvel Rivals is something he’d be open to.
- It doesn’t sound like there’s anything in the works, but Gunn noted a DC Rivals equivalent is “totally possible”.
- The comments were made during the same event as Gunn revealed a DCU game is still a couple of years away.
Marvel Rivals has been a behemoth-sized hit so far with NetEase confirming more than 40 million people have played it so far. The type of hit that must have people at DC kicking themselves wishing they’d thought of it first. However, just because they didn’t think of it first, that doesn’t mean there won’t be a DC equivalent to Marvel Rivals sometime in the future.
DC boss James Gunn answered a lot of questions about movies, TV shows, and video games connected to the iconic comic books during a recent press event. During that event, Gunn was asked if there had been any discussions about DC having its own version of Marvel Rivals. While there doesn’t appear to be anything in the works, Gunn noted it’s something that could happen down the line (thanks, ComicBook).

It’s been a less-than-fantastic start for Marvel Rivals’ two newest heroes.
Gunn’s response to being asked about a potential DC Rivals game was short, but promising. “Totally possible, I’d be open to it,” was his reply. Fair as since it isn’t an active project, and this was possibly the first time the idea had ever crossed Gunn’s mind, there’s not much else for him to say. However, considering what else Gunn discussed in terms of future DC video games, I’d be very surprised if this was the first time a Marvel Rivals game that replaces Spider-Man and Psylocke with Superman and Wonder Woman has crossed his mind.
James Gunn Is Open To DC Having Its Own Version Of Marvel Rivals
Seems Like It’s A Long Way Off If It Ever Happens, Though
While DC might not have a studio in mind for a potential live service hero shooter that uses its superhero IP, Gunn did reveal he has spoken with Rocksteady and Netherrealm and that a game that takes place in his and Peter Saffran’s DCU is still a couple of years away. Gunn has always been open about wanting to incorporate games into his DCU, potentially in a similar way to how the idea has been handled with Star Wars.
DC making its own version of Marvel Rivals might be a little tricky. The copycat accusations that would inevitably plague the game could be easily shrugged off since the game it would be “copying” is already an Overwatch-like with Marvel characters. The bigger issue is how long a DC Rivals game would take to develop.
Even if there’s been a DC Rivals in the works since Marvel Rivals was revealed last summer, it will still be at least two years away, if not longer. There’s no way of knowing whether Marvel Rivals, or hero shooters as a whole, will be in vogue by then. Committing to a project now in the hope its premise will still be the ‘in’ thing a few years from now is one of the biggest reasons Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League flopped.
