- James Gunn is open to a DC version of Marvel Rivals, teasing the studio’s future entry into the hero shooter genre.
- “Totally possible, I’d be open to it,” Gunn replied, and Marvel’s Doctor Doom and Galacta big bads for the Anti-Monitor or the Batman Who Laughs.
- Gunn’s previous statement highlighting the studio was talking to Rocksteady and NetherRealm Studios about developing new games.
James Gunn, the director steering DC Studios towards a new dawn with co-CEO Peter Safran, has recently commented on the idea of a Marvel Rivals-styled game with DC characters, and the boss would thankfully be open to the idea. DC has dished out its fair share of games over the past few years, including Gotham Knights, Batman: Arkham Shadow on the Meta Quest 3, and Injustice 2. However, none quite reached the height of Rocksteady Studios’ Arkham series, but Marvel Rivals has perhaps paved the way for a hero shooter on the horizon.
Marvel Rivals was released back in December 2024 by NetEase Games in collaboration with Marvel Games, launching as a free-to-play title with 37 characters gracing the roster, including Spider-Man, Wolverine, The Punisher, Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch. Despite its phenomenal success so far, Marvel Rivals fans are calling for the Human Torch to be changed, mainly altering the character’s powers so it’s easier to differentiate his abilities on the battlefield.

Speaking to ComicBook during a recent DC Studios event, Gunn was asked about the possibility of a DC version of Marvel Rivals. “Totally possible, I’d be open to it,” Gunn replied, which is a positive response that teases DC’s foot in the hero shooter genre. Comic-book fans already have story ideas for Marvel Rivals’ DC variant, swapping Marvel’s Doctor Doom and Galacta big bads for the Anti-Monitor or the Batman Who Laughs, both of which would take a stab at derailing the multiverse.
James Gunn Is Open to Marvel Rivals-Styled Game With DC Characters
Gamers believe Marvel Rivals left DC Games in the dust after the hero shooter’s launch, especially after the widely-regarded failure that was DC’s attempt at a live-service project, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Comic-book fans on social media wanted to remind the community of DC Universe Online, the MMO, that many referred to as the original Marvel Rivals. Others expressed their excitement for DC’s in-development Wonder Woman game and highlighted Gunn’s previous statement highlighting the studio was talking to Rocksteady and NetherRealm Studios about developing new games.
There’s a plethora of DC characters that could be brought into a Marvel Rivals competitor, including the main Justice League members: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman. However, some Marvel Rivals players think Aquaman and Green Arrow would need to be altered to exist in a DC game variant, mainly because their skillsets and attacks are perhaps too similar to Marvel’s Namor and Hawkeye. While a DC equivalent is an exciting premise, DC Studios would have big shoes to fill.
