Bravest Characters in the Red Dead Redemption Series

To be a gunslinger in Red Dead Redemption 2, one has to be pretty brave – or stupid – or both. In the case of these characters, bravery is part of their mettle that proves why they are wanted outlaws and relentless pursuers, and the best Red Dead Redemption 2 characters often have an immense streak of death behind them, along with acts of bravery that define them.

Throughout the wild ride of a tamed West, plenty of characters have proved their worth with or without a revolver in hand. It’s obvious that these characters in Red Dead Redemption 2 are the epitome of bravery thanks to the acts they display throughout the game.

Micah Bell

A Ruthless Cut-Throat Killer Who Oozes with Selfishness

There are few characters as evil and self-serving as Micah Bell. Micah is a rat in Dutch’s ear, a serpent in the form of a man and a cowboy hat who turns people on each other just to protect his own sickening hide. Yet, for all of Micah’s faults, it’s hard to admit that there’s an inkling of bravery within him. After all, he helped topple a dictator of Guarma, fight hordes of Pinkertons, and eradicate the Grays from Rhodes with two revolvers.

Sure, Micah is a rat, and a coward for the way he betrayed the Van der Linde gang by giving the Pinkertons information, but he still managed to survive and outlive most of them with his cunning and tricks. He’s not the bravest, but he is certainly up there.

Agent Andrew Milton

The Pinkerton Agent Who Pursues His Targets with Unending Fury

• Bravest Act: Ruthlessly hunting a gang of thieves and killers
• Portrayed by: John Hickok

There’s nothing Agent Milton hates more than those who refuse to adapt to a society of laws, flaws, and all. Agent Milton spends his time hunting Dutch Van der Linde and his gang, and his ruthless pursuit across various states has seen him come across and confront these people who venerate savagery multiple times. Yet, for most of these times, Milton gives them a chance to turn in Dutch Van der Linde and he’ll give the others a head start.

Agent Milton knows he’s arguing with outlaws, and pursuing careered criminals who won’t hesitate to shoot a man in the back. Yet, he doesn’t back down and has even come face-to-face with Dutch Van der Linde and his best gunslinger, Arthur Morgan, on multiple occasions without so much as a tremble.

Dutch Van der Linde

The Leader of the Van der Linde Gang Who Fights Civilization and Gravity

• Bravest Act: Fighting against the impending arrival of civilization
• Portrayed by: Benjamin Byron Davis

It’s hard not to have a little sympathy for Dutch. After all, this was a charismatic leader who fell so far down the rabbit hole after viewing society and civilization as a reprehensible world that he wanted no part in. Dutch isn’t afraid of many things, and his courage has led him into battle, alongside manipulated warriors, into robbing people who shouldn’t be robbed, like the U.S. Army.

Yet, Dutch still has his flaws within his elements of bravery, and although he’s jumped off of cliffs and battled the Pinkertons across a multitude of states, he still abandons all that he has known when he betrays Arthur. Dutch is not the bravest outlaw because he gives up and decides to cower away in the hills of West Elizabeth, and this cowardice loses him plenty of good men.

John Marston

The Golden Boy Who Defies His Leader and Fights for His Family

• Bravest Act: Being the only one to stand up to Dutch Van der Linde
• Portrayed by: Rob Wiethoff

John Marston is extremely resilient – or lucky. He’s survived a wolf attack, a prison sentence, and getting shot off of a speeding train, and every single time he’s returned to the Van der Linde gang with his gruff voice in tow. John Marston may have been a legend of the West in 1911, but back in 1899, he was still just the younger brother of Arthur Morgan who was arrogant and insubordinate – but he always spoke his mind.

John is the only one of the Van der Linde gang boys to be brave enough to challenge Dutch alongside Arthur, and even when the Pinkertons hone in on Beavers Hollow and John has a gun wound on his arm, he fights strongly with Arthur and never forgets his brother.

Hercule Fontaine

A Freedom Fighter that Battles Against Tyranny

• Bravest Act: A freedom fighter who devotes his life to freeing the oppressed people of Guarma
• Portrayed by: Guyviaud Joseph

Hercule Fontaine is the epitome of bravery. After all, he’s devoted his entire life to ensuring that the captives and people of Guarma go free. This Haitian-born hero fights for Guarma and battles the fascists in control of the island to bring about a rebellion uprising against Colonel Fussar by smuggling supplies and killing soldiers with his allies.

Hercule may be a minor character to feature in the Guarma chapter of Red Dead Redemption 2, but he’s more than deserving of recognition as a truly brave soul who will fight for people he doesn’t even know, just because he knows that oppression is not right.

Sadie Adler

The Widower Who Became a Renowned Bounty Hunter

• Bravest Act: Fighting remnants of the O’Driscolls with or without Arthur’s help
• Portrayed by: Alex McKenna

Sadie Adler wasn’t always an outlaw, nor was she a widow. Once upon a time, Sadie had a farm in the mountains with her loving husband. That was, until the O’Driscolls stole her life from her, and ever since, she’s been consumed by vengeance. Sadie doesn’t care who she kills anymore, and her ruthless attitude displays a gunslinger who might be late to the party, but one who is never unwelcome.

Sadie will run through fire to save the Marston family, and if she has to do it without help, then she will. Sadie isn’t afraid of a fight because she has nothing left to lose, which is why she makes a resilient bounty hunter and a true lady of death when it comes to O’Driscolls.

Charles Smith

The Outcast Who Doesn’t Need a Home to Fight for What’s Right

• Bravest Act: Allying with the Wapiti Indian Reservation against the U.S. Army
• Portrayed by: Noshir Dalal

Despite the modernization of society, the world seems to have no room in it for Charles Smith, a man born of African and Indian blood. Charles Smith has never felt like he’s fit in anywhere, and this boils within the calm man until hell breaks loose, and rage breaks free from his bonds. Charles Smith can be a true animal when he needs to be, but his true bravery lies in the ability to compose himself and battle injustices.

Charles Smith is perhaps the most honorable of the Van der Linde gang, and he has a clear devotion to the rights and wrongs where he will even stand up for the animals that are needlessly slaughtered. Charles doesn’t just fight for himself, he’s taken many lives in support of causes that are not his own, which proves how fearless he is when faced with war.

Arthur Morgan

The Outlaw Who Stares at Death with a Revolver in Hand

• Bravest Act: Standing unshaken against the Pinkertons and the Van der Linde gang
• Portrayed by: Roger Clark

Arthur Morgan easily holds strong as the fierce gunslinger of the Van der Linde gang, and while he may express doubt and disapproval, he will always ride with Dutch with a gun in hand. Whether it’s fighting warring gangs, battling lawmen and Pinkertons, or even starting a war against the U.S. Army, Arthur Morgan will not back down from a fight if it means there’s a chance to leave this life behind and save the gang – or what’s left of it.

Even if Arthur expresses fear of dying, and the afraid nature that comes with the unknown, Arthur still finds the bravery to not back down, and when facing death itself, he gives everything he has to fight just a little longer to make sure John can make it, to make sure that he can see his last sunrise.
