Captain America: Brave New World had a good start, but its second week at the box office wasn’t as impressive.
The Metal Gear Solid creator took to X, formerly Twitter and asked a question many could probably relate to. He also admitted that he confused the film with the Thunderbolts* trailer. “I watched ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ in IMAX. I vaguely remember Sam receiving the shield in ‘Endgame,’ but when did he officially become Cap? Is it because I haven’t seen ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?'” he asked. Kojima also added, “And what’s this about the Avengers being reorganized? I’m also getting it mixed up with the ‘Thunderbolts’ trailer.” Kojima’s question received many reactions from his followers, with many agreeing that he missed it because Sam officially became Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He was also right about remembering a scene in Endgame when Steve handed the shield to Sam, setting up for the Disney series where the latter officially became the new Captain America.
“So Sam officially became Cap at the end of Endgame. Then it was The Falcon and Winter Soldier that showed Sam’s reluctance but acceptance to be Cap,” one replied. “Post Endgame there’s no official form of Avengers. Thunderbolts is about bad guys or characters with shady pasts that can become heroes too.” One fan of Kojima jokingly said that the MCU timeline was similar to the Metal Gear game. “I love all your work and every Metal Gear game. But brother, the very same can be said with the Metal Gear series! Almost no one knows in what order the games should be played or the timeline they take place [rolling on the floor laughing emoji]. It’s all over the place. Still love them!” Marco The Xican commented. Some pointed out that Kojima had stopped watching MCU shows after Endgame and some sypathized with him. The Metal Gear Network, Kojima’s fan community said they loved Marvel, but when it became “mandatory to watch every dog-s**t TV spin-off series,” they lost interest. Another said, they felt the same and they were also tired of the need to watch other movies or TV shows to understand the events in the latest film.
Kojima’s concerns were valid because he didn’t watch The Falcon and Winter Soldier, where Sam officially became the new Captain America. Credits to him that he remembered the scene where Steve handed the shield to Sam in Endgame because not all viewers would surely remember it, given that there were a lot of things that happened in Endgame. Also, even if one hasn’t watched The Falcon and Winter Soldier, the Endgame scene where Steve gave the shield to Sam was already an indication that the latter would carry the mantle. As for his Thunderbolts* confusion, it was probably because MCU had been promoting Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* alongside each other and some characters appear in both movies. For instance, Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), made a cameo in the latest Captain America. Stan will have a longer screen time in Thunderbolts*.
As for his concerns about the Avengers, the team has not been disorganized but disbanded. After Endgame, the members either retired, died, or went on a separate path. Iron Man and Black Widow were dead, while Hawkeye and Captain America were retired. Thor is still active but on his own and Hulk is semi-retired. There is no active Avengers team in the MCU and Thunderbolts are different from them. The Winter Soldier, who is part of the Thunderbolts, appeared in the Avengers movies, but he was never an official part of the Avengers.
Captain America: Brave New World is still showing.
