4X games like Stellaris and Sins of a Solar Empire have long transfixed me. Their massive scale is not only a battleground, but a storytelling canvas. The only problem is that they take forever. If you are an adult with an actual life, how can you find dozens of hours to give to building a space superpower? Luckily, Hyper Empire is here to fill in the gap, promising all the tactical decision-making and strategic mind games of a classic 4X in 40 minutes or less. The full release will come later this year, but you can pick up the demo as part of Steam Next Fest right now.

Like in other 4X games, you’ll explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate across a wide galaxy of potential. Five factions populate Hyper Empire’s starry worlds, ranging from human alliances and pirate clans to robotic hiveminds. From a central hub menu, you’ll manage the ships in your fleet, create new trade routes, and recruit heroes to inspire your populace and strengthen your military might.

The quick pace of Hyper Empire doesn’t come only from its slick UI, but its streamlined victory conditions. For example, storing a specific amount of money will net you an economic victory. Besting your enemies in massive “sector battles” will ensure a military triumph. You can also win through cultivating your empire’s faith, researching a specific amount of technologies, brokering treaties, or even just surviving 50 turns. As for combat itself, battles are in real-time and fast-paced. Position your fleet correctly and use your flagship’s abilities at the right time to ensure victory.
