Doctor Who Season 15 Gets A Behind-The-Scenes Update
The next season of Doctor Who just got an interesting update about the work going on behind the scenes.
Christopher Chung is confirmed as among the stars in Doctor Who Season 15. He will play a new character named Cassio. “I’m absolutely thrilled to step into the Whoniverse as Cassio for season 2!” Chung said about his casting in the sci-fi series. “This show is legendary, and getting to be part of this new era feels surreal. Working with Russell and Ncuti has been a dream!” Chung also teased that the episode he was part of was massive and contained the elements fans loved about the show. He was even excited for them to see it. “This episode is huge – packed with everything Who fans love: heart, adventure, and a touch of madness. I can’t wait for everyone to see what’s in store – it’s going to be iconic. Get ready!” Chung added.
Showrunner Russell T Davies was also delighted to have Chung on the show. The filmmaker admitted that he was a “huge fan of Slow Horses” and he was “so excited to get Chris involved.” Davies didn’t share more details about Chung’s character, Cassio, but teased that he would be playing a crucial role in the episode and that fans should watch out for whether he was an ally or an enemy of the Doctor. “He brings all of his strength and style and talent to one of the darkest, toughest episodes we’ve ever made. As for whether Cassio is an ally or an enemy of the Doctor, you’ll have to wait and see, but I can promise, it’s one hell of a meeting!” Davies added. Doctor Who also unveiled the first look of Chung’s Cassio on X, formerly Twitter and he looked serious and cool.
Chung is a versatile actor, and his addition to Gatwa’s second Doctor Who season will surely delight fans. He plays Roddy Ho in Slow Horses, a tech expert at Slough House. He is a brilliant hacker and often brags about his skills and romantic life, but his colleagues doubt the latter. Although he is arrogant, he is very capable of intelligence gathering and hacking. His presence in the series adds comedic elements due to his arrogance and lack of social awareness. From the look of it, Chung’s role in Doctor Who may be more serious and not just comic relief because Davies mentioned that it was “one of the darkest, toughest episodes.” However, there’s also the possibility that he will still bring comedic elements to the episode.
Doctor Who explores heavy themes like death, war and existential threat. So, adding comedy offers the audience emotional relief. It balances drama, horror and humor, which has been a key part of the show’s identity. Brits embrace wit and sarcasm, making dark stories entertaining and relatable. So, fans may see a familiar Chung in the said episode. But if it’s a totally new Chung from Slow Horses, it is still acceptable as long as the character contributes to the story’s plot – not forced and definitely not a filler or throwaway character (which is likely not the case).
Doctor Who Season 15 is expected to premiere in April 2025.
