Summary

  • Zoro actor Mackenyu aims to make his character more deadly and cooler in One Piece’s upcoming second season.
  • Mackenyu’s focus on highlighting Zoro’s combat prowess and cool lethality proves his dedication to the role.
  • Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece boosts sales and exposure for the manga, with the second season set for a late 2025 release.

While One Piece fans were immensely pleased with the casting and characterizations for the first season of Netflix’s live-action adaptation, one important cast member is shifting gears from season one’s introductory phase to give fans something more in the upcoming second season.

One Piece was seen as impossible to adapt into live-action for the longest time for a plethora of reasons ranging from the protagonist’s impressive powers of elasticity and the series’ notoriously silly cast to the sheer number of volumes the legendary manga has accumulated. Despite all this, Netflix would take a chance on a live-action adaptation of the series, and the resulting show would have an impressively well-received first season on the streamer. As such, it was a no-brainer that the show would be coming back for a second installment to adapt the next few arcs of the manga, and its even been rumored that One Piece has been renewed for a third season by Netflix. While that’s yet to be confirmed, production work on the second season is already in full swing, and fans all around the world are eager to see what misadventured the Straw Hats get up to in the next set of episodes.

A new promo for One Piece Season 2 features a fan-favorite character rocking an anime-inspired costume.

Fans got to know a lot about Zoro in the first season of Netflix’s One Piece as it introduced the OG Straw Hats to the audience, but the star behind the swordsman has a whole different agenda for the show’s upcoming second season on the streamer. As per Popverse, Zoro actor Mackenyu took time out while promoting his role in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows to comment on how his goals concerning his One Piece character had shifted between the first and upcoming second seasons of the show, highlighting the main focus of the two performances. “[In] the first season, I was trying to find out how to bring Zoro to life. That was my main goal for season one,” Mackenyu explained. “But for season two, the goal was to make him a lot deadlier and cooler, just level this badass character up.”

Despite being the butt of one of the manga’s most long-running gags, thanks to his almost impossibly bad sense of direction, Zoro is undoubtedly the coolest character in One Piece. On top of this, his mastery of combat and use of swordsmanship as his first choice makes him easily the most lethal Straw Hat, consistently putting foes down for good where his teammates would otherwise knock them out with a stiff kick or cartoonishly large fist. Recognizing and making a conscious effort to highlight these aspects of the character now that fans have a baseline appreciation for him as a person shows a lot of focus on Mackenyu’s part that fans should appreciate. The One Piece Star recently made a bold claim about playing Zoro long-term, and his approach to developing and presenting the character certainly shows it. While the second season isn’t out yet, Mackenyu’s season one performance is proof positive that he can pull off his new mission for the character, as season one Zoro already had an air of cool lethality to him, and future arcs are stuffed full of opportunities to better show off his combat prowess and laid-back personality.

It’s recently been set in stone that Netflix’ One Piece is actually boosting sales and exposure for its source material, and that’s down to the shockingly well-done casting process and the effort put into the show by everyone involved. With Mackenyu set to bring even more of Zoro’s prominent manga properties to the forefront in the next season, there’s no doubt that viewers are in for more of the same excellent work that earned the show Eiichiro Oda’s stamp of approval and personal involvement. While there’s so much more story and character development to cover down the line, fans can rest easy and look forward to enjoying the upcoming second season in the meantime.

Netflix’s live-action One Piece adaptation is available to stream on Netflix, with the second season currently still set for a late 2025 release.
