Moon Knight Season 2’s Uncertainty Is Proof That Marvel Doesn’t Care About The Fans
Marvel’s uncertainty about Moon Knight Season 2 shows a lack of concern for fans. Here’s why this decision could hurt the MCU’s future.
Marvel TV exec Brad Winderbaum spoke with ComicBook about the launch of Daredevil: Born Again next month. During the interview, he mentioned Moon Knight and gave a positive update about the anti-hero, noting that they have plans for him. However, his return will not be in the same capacity fans have been clamoring for. “So I think Marvel Television has happened in waves, and I think Moon Knight happened in a wave of shows that were going to establish characters that would tie-in to the future,” Winderbaum said before adding that the anticipated Moon Knight Season 2 is not on the cards. “And moving forward our priorities have shifted. We’re making shows as shows that can exist as annual releases, more like television. I would love to see a Moon Knight Season 2, but there are plans for Moon Knight down the road.”
Moon Knight, portrayed by Oscar Isaac, is a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder (DID). Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the Moon and a morally ambiguous deity, chose Marc Spector, aka Moon Knight, as his avatar. He grants him superpowers — strength, speed and reflexes, especially at night — but he also manipulates and controls his mind. Khonshu takes advantage of Marc’s DID to make him dependent on him and demands brutal justice by using excessive force and violence. In the comics, Khonshu can control Marc’s body and even speak through him. Due to Khonshu’s ruthlessness, Moon Knight often finds himself at odds with the other superheroes. While Khonshu is definitely not a villain, he is also not a benevolent god. The Moon Knight series debuted on March 30, 2022, on Disney Plus.
The return of Moon Knight is definitely a treat to fans. Isaac’s performance in the said MCU project, which also includes psychological thriller elements, was well-received. In fact, some consider it one of the best in the MCU because the Dune star seamlessly switches between multiple personalities. His acting versatility was highlighted as he portrayed multiple personalities — Marc Spector, a mercenary and vigilante; Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift shop employee; and Jake Lockley, a charismatic cab driver who can also be violent and ruthless. The fifth episode, Asylum, featured one of the most emotional moments in the MCU when it showed Moon Knight in the rehabilitation facility. Isaac was able to portray his different characters with distinctions. Steven’s screen time gave him that awkward but lovable aura, Marc the intense and badass persona and Jake showcased a street-level character with Steven’s compassionate nature and Marc’s violent and rough demeanor. Thus, there was an incessant demand for Moon Knight in Season 2. Winderbaum’s update is both positive and negative in the sense that Moon Knight is officially coming back to the MCU, but fans are still not getting the second season they wanted.
Moon Knight streams on Disney Plus.
