Hades 2: How To Defeat Talos

We detail Talos’ moves and counters in Hades 2.

Thankfully, there are only so many ways a mountain-sized titan can use his tail. With enough practice and study of this guide, you’ll find yourself breezing through the Trial of the Tail and up to Typhon himself without breaking a sweat. The first step? Remembering that the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

Tail Of Typhon Move Descriptions And Counters

Like the other minibosses of the summit, the Tail of Typhon has very little in its arsenal to depend upon.

With such clear indications of its attacks, it’s thankfully also very easy to avoid its attacks once you learn the patterns. We recommend referencing the table above to cover those attacks.

Melinoe dashes behind the charging Tail of Typhon in Hades 2.

The most dangerous of these moves is the Hyper Wave. Dealing static 80 damage with the Strength card activated and even more without, this can easily be a run-ending attack.

If you ever see the tail retreating left or right very quickly,

  • Sprint after it.
  • If it is beginning to charge, ensure that you are safely behind the tail before attacking.

If you are ever caught unawares or on the farthest edge of the map, you can attempt to hug the far wall and dash forward through the wave. However, its velocity and a large area of effect make it incredibly difficult, if not sometimes impossible, to maneuver.

How To Beat The Tail Of Typhon

The name of the game when it comes to the Tail of Typhon is patience. Your openings for attack will be large, but your punishment for failing to stay inside those openings can be massive.

Likewise, an awareness of your field and ability to counteract zoning will play a pivotal role in both your survival and your clear time. You’ll have to manage the field while also managing his attacks.

Suggested Boons

Melinoe uses Hestia's Fire with Momus against the Tail of Typhon in Hades 2.

Before getting into the nitty gritty of any strategy, there are a few boons that might prove useful if you find yourself struggling against this pesky tail:

Boon

God

Why it works

Lightning Strike/Thunder Flourish

Zeus

With the tail’s large healthpool, it primarily acts as a killer of time. To chunk through it, you might want a Blitz effect to take large quantities of health quickly.

Single Elimination

Ares

Much like above, Single Elimination deals 20-35 percent more damage on each hit (and more on upgrades) as the tail has no summons, guaranteeing a permanent bonus for the whole fight.

Glowing Coal

Hestia

A projectile cast can be really useful for getting in extra ranged damage while waiting for your opening. Hestia’s Controlled Burn might be useful as well, but it doesn’t come with the same slowdown effect.

Frosty Veneer

Demeter

With the amount of damage this tail and Typhon can do, it might be beneficial to have Demeter’s Infusion boon to limit all incoming damage to no higher than 20 if you find yourself getting hit often or are running low-HP build and are feeling cautious.

Tail of Typhon charges a Hyper Wave as Melinoe stands behind it in Hades 2.

The first key to defeating the Tail will be watching. Each move has its own opening, but there are two moves in particular that will give you the widest opportunities for big damage:

  1. Hyper Wave
  2. Ground Pulse

The first is explained in the moves section above, giving ample opportunity for you to attack when behind in the safe zone. The second, however, is likely to be more promising with its higher use frequency.

Melinoe rapidly strikes the soon defeated Tail of Typhon with Zeus's lightning in Hades 2.

With an opening during the first creation of the outer ring, you can:

  • Set up one good attack before dashing out of the first ring and in through the second.
  • Once through the rings, you’ll have several seconds of opportunity during the closing of the rings and the cooldown after to make the most of your window.

Be careful you don’t dash prematurely into the second ring or straight inward. You want to come in at a slight angle to prevent yourself from accidentally dashing into the closing ring.

Tail of Typhon chases after Melinoe while using its pincers in Hades 2.

For his pincer attack, you likely won’t get many chances to reply in kind without risking a hit.

Unless you’re very brave, play it safe by dashing through that first pinch and then running around the back of the tail. If you have enough room, you might sneak in a quick attack or two during the animation.

After this animation plays, attack, but be very cautious. His cooldown time for this move is short.

Melinoe strikes the Tail of Typhon as it prepares to spin in Hades 2.

The spinning animation can be very lucrative for your damage output, but you should beware that the hitbox for the animation is just a hair wider than it appears.

Seeds will also sprout, so if you have several clumped nearby, prioritize knocking them out so you aren’t caught in a bad spot later.

The seeds can be broken by not only dashing in their proximity but also by ranged attacks and casts. The staff’s special and torches can trigger them, for better and for worse.

Melinoe comments that she remembers the arena where the Tail of Typhon lies in wait in Hades 2.

With some perseverance, you’ll overcome the tail and be able to file away what you’ve learned for later. The tail will appear on every run to the summit, so you’ll get plenty of practice.

Your reward should be a rare item, like a three-level Pom of Power or an upgraded rarity chance Olympian boon—a good consolation prize to take on your way to that tail’s gargantuan owner just ahead.
