In the series, the Rinnegan is like an evolution of the Sharingan. While the Mangekyo Sharingan can be obtained through immense emotional trauma, and the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan through the transplantation of another person’s eyes, the Rinnegan requires a complex process to acquire its power, and it is the fusion of Indra and Asura’s chakra. Madara’s plan relied on Nagato eventually using the Rinne Rebirth Jutsu to bring him back to life. However, things didn’t go as he expected. After years of manipulation by Obito, who was carrying out Madara’s will, Nagato ultimately betrayed the plan by sacrificing himself to revive the people of Konoha.
