The Key To Awakening The Rinnegan
Indra And Asura Chakra
In the series, the Rinnegan is like an evolution of the Sharingan. While the Mangekyo Sharingan can be obtained through immense emotional trauma, and the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan through the transplantation of another person’s eyes, the Rinnegan requires a complex process to acquire its power, and it is the fusion of Indra and Asura’s chakra. Indra and Asura were the sons of Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths.
Indra inherited his father’s powerful chakra and visual prowess; while Asura was weaker and lacked his brother’s natural genius, he had a strong will and compassion. Over generations, their reincarnations battled continuously, with the Uchiha inheriting Indra’s chakra and the Senju inheriting Asura’s. However, none of the clans could awaken the Rinnegan because they only carried half of the required elements or chakra.
Indra’s reincarnation is Madara Uchiha, and he has always been a power-hungry shinobi. This is why he and Hashirama Senju constantly fight to test each other’s strength. Madara knew that to achieve the ultimate power, he needed more than just the Uchiha’s strength. He also needed Asura’s chakra, and the only way to obtain it was by fusing his DNA with that of Hashirama, the reincarnation of Asura.
The Rivalry Of Madara Uchiha And Hashirama Senju
The Birth Of The Rinnegan
The rivalry between the two shinobis defined their era because Hashirama was the only shinobi capable of matching and surpassing Madara. Hashirama has great healing abilities with his Wood release, and this makes it difficult for even a Uchiha with an awakened Sharingan to compete against. Despite possessing the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, Madara was never able to defeat him. During their final battle at the Valley of the End, Madara took his most desperate step toward achieving great power to rule the world. Unbeknownst to Hashirama, Madara had secretly taken a bit of his flesh during their fight. He stored this DNA and, after faking his death, went into hiding to experiment on himself. He implanted Hashirama’s cells into his own body, hoping to merge the power of both bloodlines.

The process of the Rinnegan was not immediate, the transformation took years and possibly decades. Hence, this suggests that the Rinnegan couldn’t be activated through willpower alone. Madara connected his body to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to ensure the fusion of Indra and Asura’s chakra and his evolution into the Sage of Six Paths. However, by the time the power manifested, Madara was an old man, and since time was short, he devised a new plan.
Passing The Rinnegan Power To Negato
The Rinne Rebirth Jutsu Plan
Madara did not intend to die before achieving his goal, so he secretly transplanted his Rinnegan into Nagato, a member of the Uzumaki clan, whose life force and chakra reserves were strong enough to handle the power of the Rinnegan. His ultimate plan was for Nagato to revive him using the Rinne Rebirth Jutsu. The Rinne Rebirth Jutsu is a technique that could bring someone back to life at the cost of the user’s own. However, Madara also included Obito Uchiha in his chess game and manipulated Obito to carry his will as they were part of the same clan. Nagato was unaware of Madara’s involvement and grew up believing that his power was his own because it manifested due to the tragedies of war and the death of Yahiko. This led to him creating the villain group, Akatsuki, believing he could bring peace to the world through pain and fear. But in reality, he was just a pawn in Madara and Obito’s game plan.

Rinnegan abilities are an amazing power in Naruto. Here are the best ones.
Madara’s plan relied on Nagato eventually using the Rinne Rebirth Jutsu to bring him back to life. However, things didn’t go as he expected. After years of manipulation by Obito, who was carrying out Madara’s will, Nagato ultimately betrayed the plan by sacrificing himself to revive the people of Konoha. Naruto’s influence and Negato’s ideals overpowered Madara’s original intentions. This forced Obito to seek another way to bring Madara back. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Obito used Kabuto to resurrect Madara using the Edo Tensei. Afterward, Madara escaped the Edo Tensei form by forcing Obito to restore him to life with the rebirth jutsu. After returning to life, Madara restored himself to his godlike power with the Rinnegan. With his Rinnegan restored, Madara gained access to abilities like Chibaku Tensei, Limbo Clones, and the full power of the Six Paths and could use the Infinite Tsukuyomi as he had planned long ago.
