Amid the discussions about the use of generative AI (Gen AI) in video games, a game developer released an image that can be used on Steam pages to clearly state that generative AI was not used in a project. The creator said that the “No Gen AI” seal can be used at a game dev’s own risk, and included instructions on how to use it on Steam and other storefronts.
The use of generative AI in video game development remains a contentious topic in the industry. While some companies like Microsoft have commented on using generative AI to develop some games via its Muse technology made alongside Ninja Theory, others, like the Black Myth: Wukong development team, have condemned its use and stated that it uses stolen assets from human artists. Despite the staggering growth of generative AI and programs like ChatGPT, companies like Nintendo have stated that they have no plans to use generative AI in any first-party titles for the foreseeable future.

Given the landscape surrounding the use of generative AI, some game developers have taken a stance against its usage. On Bluesky, Polygon Treehouse creative director Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou introduced a “No Gen AI” seal for indie game developers to use as a way to assure users that generative AI was not used in the game’s development at all. The creator of Roki and Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island stated that the seal does not require permission to use and that its implementation by other companies would be more of an honor system than a binding agreement. The No Gen AI seal is free for users and game developers to download from the Polygon Treehouse website. Kanaris-Sotiriou stated that anyone who uses the seal to promote their game assumes all risks.

Kanaris-Sotiriou said that the No Gen AI seal was directly inspired by the famous Nintendo Seal of Quality, which was changed in 2003 to its current look. Rather than triangular edges, the No Gen AI seal was designed like a cogwheel. The logo is also a golden color, with both flat and shadowed versions available to use. In response, other users chimed in with their support of the No Gen AI seal. Some users shared their variants of the seal in different styles, while others changed the words to include PC mods and non-indie projects.
Although Steam has issued some rules about generative AI disclosure in games allowed on the storefront, the rules are subject to change down the line. Only time will tell how much traction the No Gen AI seal project will gain.
