  • In a single afternoon, fans “crushed” their financial worries, rallying to support them across social media.
  • They’ve since removed the donation links and updated their initial comment with a touching thank you.

Yesterday, Dark Souls and Elden Ring dataminer and YouTuber Zullie the Witch penned a heartfelt comment to their audience. With a drought in sponsorships and over $15,000 in medical bills “looming” overhead, they needed help. And so they reluctantly asked for donations to at least put a dent in their financial woes.

In a single afternoon, the Soulsborne community rallied behind Zullie and “crushed” those concerns almost entirely. The donation links have since been removed, and in their place, Zullie updated their comment to thank everyone who lent a hand.

  • “This has already smashed every expectation I had and I’m kind of overwhelmed by how quickly and emphatically you’ve all lent your support. I’ve always been a deeply anxious person, and a large emphasis of that anxiety lately has been financial issues, so I truly didn’t anticipate seeing the bulk of those issues get crushed into nothing in the span of a single afternoon. I’d been deeply reluctant to ask for assistance, especially because I felt like I had avenues of addressing these problems that weren’t available to the average person, like vying for sponsor money or trying harder to make more videos, but having finally asked, I don’t know how to express how unprepared I was for the level of generosity I’ve received. It feels conflicting, because I’ve always been ashamed of even slightly inconveniencing others, but choosing to suffer in noble silence was still suffering. Thank you all so much, I’m hardly able to comprehend, let alone express, what I’m feeling right now.”

Zullie got into datamining in Dark Souls 2. The first time they ever hacked a Souls game was when they changed their character’s name to Zullie the Witch so that they could cosplay the character in fight clubs, given how many players would dress up as their counterpart Alva.

This small, innocuous hack — which can be done simply with Cheat Engine — was the first domino to fall. Before long, Zullie was uncovering cut content, conducting deep dives into foundational mechanics, and piecing together lore by looking beyond what we can find in-game. Their discoveries have been instrumental in understanding how these games work.

Zullie made headlines week after week when Elden Ring launched with a slew of exciting finds. They discovered that Rennala might be a cut Dark Souls 3 boss, that Melina has an unused combat moveset, and that Torrent could originally attack enemies. That’s only scratching the surface of what they uncovered. They’ve made similar landmark finds across Bloodborne and Dark Souls, which has made them a cornerstone of the Soulsborne community. It’s no surprise then, that when it came time to repay the favour, fans were quick to lend a hand.
