Nvidia is facing a growing manufacturing issue with its latest graphics cards. Reports of at least one Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 card with missing render output units (ROPs) have surfaced, coming just days after Nvidia confirmed that only a supposedly limited number of RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 Ti cards were affected.
While these new Nvidia GPUs are now among the best graphics cards you can buy, this growing manufacturing issue adds to a series of problems the company has been facing since it launched its new GPU lineup, from melting RTX 5090 power cables to near-zero stock availability across the board. Given that Nvidia only confirmed the first two cards in its earlier statement, it’s possible that this manufacturing crisis is a bigger problem than the company first thought.
This new issue with RTX 5080 cards came via a Reddit post, where user gingeraffe90 shared a GPU-Z screenshot showing their RTX 5080 Founders Edition card with only 104 ROPs, compared to the 112 ROPS that the card is supposed to ship with. The GPU-Z details were also published online to confirm the report was genuine.
This follows a substantial amount of reporting over the last few days, both online and in the media, showing RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 Ti cards with similarly missing ROPs, impacting their gaming performance. The issue forced Nvidia to issue a statement to The Verge on February 22, telling the outlet that it has “identified a rare issue affecting less than 0.5% (half a percent) of RTX 5090 / 5090D and 5070 Ti GPUs, which have one fewer ROP than specified,” suggesting that the “average graphical performance impact is 4%.”
While the earlier Nvidia statement didn’t mention the RTX 5080, the advice for those GPU owners is going to be the same. If you have an affected RTX 50-series GPU, you should be able to return it for a replacement via your manufacturer’s RMA process.
Nvidia and gamers alike will be hoping that, despite RTX 5080 cards now also reportedly being affected by this manufacturing issue, the total number of defective cards continues to be low.
