Dauntless is Shutting Down

Dauntless is Shutting Down

Summary

  • Dauntless will shut down on May 29, and will receive no further updates or content before then.
  • The shutdown comes after Phoenix Labs’ controversial Awakening update in late 2024.
  • Microtransactions in Dauntless may see policy changes before the game’s closure.

On social media, Dauntless developer Phoenix Labs said that the monster-slaying online game will be shut down on May 29. Unfortunately, following the controversial release of the Awakening update in late 2024, Phoenix Labs also confirmed that Dauntless would no longer receive any updates or content before its May shutdown.

Originally launched in September 2019 on PC and consoles, Dauntless was Phoenix Labs’ first release. Taking inspiration from titles like Monster Hunter, Dauntless is a free-to-play game that allows players to team up to face off against Behemoths of varying difficulty levels. Dauntless eventually saw releases on the Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S within its first two years of service. Phoenix Labs was purchased by Forte Labs, a blockchain-focused firm, in 2023. Following the release of the Awakening update, Dauntless was review-bombed on Steam by dissatisfied players. At the time of writing, Dauntless‘ overall Steam rating was overwhelmingly negative.

Game Devs Take A Stand Against Generative AI

In response to the discussions surrounding generative AI, some game developers make their stance against it abundantly clear.

After Phoenix Labs laid off over 100 members of its staff in January 2025, the company announced that Dauntless would not be around for much longer. On social media, Phoenix Labs confirmed the sad news that Dauntless will shut down on May 29 at 11:45 PM Pacific, or 2:45 AM Eastern, on May 30. Although the game was planning to release another update to address concerns raised after Awakening, that will no longer happen. Dauntless will not receive any further updates or new content before its shutdown, meaning players will have just three months to experience all the content that the game currently offers. Once late May rolls around, Dauntless‘ servers will be inaccessible, and the game will be removed from all storefronts.

When Is Dauntless Shutting Down?

  • Dauntless will shut down on May 29, 2025.

With microtransactions being a major part of Dauntless, it remains to be seen what policies will be changed before the game goes dark. The game’s run will end just three months shy of its sixth anniversary. Although Phoenix Labs is shuttering Dauntless, its second title, a fantasy farm simulator called Fae Farm, remains available at the time of writing. Fae Farm launched the Skies of Azoria expansion in June 2024, which added a sky-based area for players to explore.

Although Dauntless was considered one of the better monster-slaying titles not made by Capcom, the failed launch of the Awakening update sealed its demise. Considering that Fae Farm requires a purchase to play, only time will tell if it will suffer the same unfortunate fate as Dauntless.
