Summary

  • Captain America: Brave New World had a strong opening weekend but faced a steep 68% drop in box office sales in its second week.
  • Several critics and audiences were disappointed with the movie, with many feeling it focused too much on Red Hulk and not Captain America.
  • Revealing the Red Hulk in the marketing of the film may have detracted from the story, and many critics felt it was a missed opportunity that it didn’t feature the Young Avengers.

Captain America: Brave New World failed to maintain its performance at the box office. The number of audiences who watched the movie significantly dropped in its second week.

Captain America: Brave New World, the first Captain America without Chris Evans, received a mixed reception from the audience. Some were so impressed with it, while others thought it was average and not the worst. One Reddit user said it was not “MCU’s worst offerings” but “quite a decent return-to-form for Marvel.” Some felt that Marvel Studios spoiled the movie by including Red Hulk in the trailer and marketing promos. The latest Captain America is the third lowest-rated MCU movie on Rotten Tomatoes, just behind Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Eternals. Regardless, it had a strong opening weekend, grossing over $100 million domestically. However, the new update about the movie starring Anthony Mackie is disappointing.

Captain America: Brave New World made $100 million when it dropped over the holiday weekend on February 14. However, the film failed to keep the momentum as its box office performance dwindled in its second week. According to Variety, tickets sold dropped by 68%, making only $28.3 million from over 4,000 theaters in North America. However, Captain America remains in first place on box office charts after generating $141 million domestically and $289 globally. The outlet noted that it’s not new for live-action movies to slide on the subsequent weekends. However, the Brave New World case reportedly “fell on the steeper side,” close to Ant-Man 3‘s performance, which experienced a 70% drop on the subsequent weekend.

Senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian weighed in on Captain America: Brave New World‘s performance at the box office. According to him, the significant drop showed “less audience enthusiasm.” “This is the new normal for Marvel movies,” Dergarabedian explained. “There’s still no denying these movies have appeal, and ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ will likely threepeat at the box office. But a second weekend drop of 68% reflects less audience enthusiasm than you’d expect from Marvel.”

Captain America: Brave New World’s significant drop in its second week is not a complete surprise. The movie has received negative reviews from many audiences. Also, it only received 49% approval ratings from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Many were not pleased with it because they felt it was more of a Red Hulk film. “It’s not actually a Captain America movie: It’s a Thunderbolt Ross movie,” The Bulwark’s Sonny Bunch said. Chicago Reader’s Top Critic Ben Kaye added that if the latest Captain America hints at what Marvel Studios stores for their fans, then “MCU is in more trouble than we thought.”

Among the criticisms aimed at the Captain America movie was including Red Hulk in its marketing because the character’s inclusion in the film would have been a massive surprise to fans if they had not been aware of his presence. “CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD isn’t a bad movie. Problem is, the whole story is building toward Red Hulk and Disney GAVE IT AWAY IN THE MARKETING,” a filmmaker said on X, formerly Twitter. Several agreed and shared the same sentiment. Meanwhile, some felt it missed the opportunity to build the Young Avengers. Despite the criticism, many fans still loved the film and they felt that it salvaged the MCU. However, the negative reviews seem to outweigh the positive remarks.

Captain America: Brave New World is still showing.
