Baldur’s Gate 3 fans are giving the game a gothic horror makeover by adapting the incredibly popular Curse of Strahd adventure module as a fully-fledged custom campaign. And yes, you can smooch the vampire.

Curse of Strahd follows the vampire Strahd von Zarovich, who rules over Barovia. In this Dracula-inspired horror affair, players hunt down Strahd within his own castle walls.

As with any mod of this scope, it’s an ambitious undertaking. Not only will there be new companions, Tarokka Reading, romance options, and branching paths, all aiming to match Larian with volunteers alone, it’s also set within Ravenloft, which will have to be designed from the ground up in Baldur’s Gate 3.

However, the team is keenly aware of just how long projects like this take to develop, and that just announcing it to the community is already a huge commitment (Fallout: London took over five years to develop, and Black Mesa a staggering 15 years). On the FAQ page, Project Strahd stresses that it “will take a long time” to finish and won’t be released until it’s ready.

Ireena, Barovia, New Companions: Everything You Need To Know

Project Strahd plans to implement six new companions “with at least one more joining you later”, although the team hasn’t revealed who these are yet. And true to Baldur’s Gate 3, they’ll be fully romanceable, with unique interactions and encounters throughout the adventure. And like I said, you can smooch the vampire, but the team warns that “it’s not a good idea.” That’ll definitely stop the army of Astarion girlies from hounding his castle gates like bloodthirsty thralls.

However, the campaign won’t follow Tav, so old companions can’t venture to Barovia with you. “Project Strahd will be a separate adventure with original companions and a distinct story that is not connected to the events of BG3”.

Another big question with Project Strahd is how it plans to adapt an adventure module as a campaign, given that you need a Dungeon Master to lead the experience. In the FAQ, the team explains that it will be “filling the role of the DM by sticking as close as possible to the bones of RAW”. So, while the team aims for the project to be a faithful adaptation, we can expect some creative liberties as any DM is wont to take.

Project Strahd has been in development since last September, but it was only announced over the weekend. That’s because the team plans to open applications to the public soon. A mod of this scale will inevitably require a huge team of dedicated fans, so if you have any experience in 3D modelling, level design, writing, or voice acting, and are interested, it might be worth throwing your hat in the ring.

The team plans to launch Project Strahd on the Nexus website.

In the meantime, Project Strahd teases that it has “something fun coming”. If other custom campaigns are anything to go by, perhaps we can look forward to a small Barovia demo to whet our appetites.
