The beauty of first-person RPGs is they help you really feel like you’re the character since you’re seeing through their eyes. This feeling is fitting for a genre that’s all about role-playing. Naturally, though, it takes more than a first-person viewpoint for a game to be good. It needs a lot more going for it, like the following games have.

One thing you don’t often see in the RPG genre is parkour. Yes, you may see a little bit of climbing, but you don’t often see characters jump from building to building at breakneck speed.

Yet, that is something you see in Dying Light 2, as you play as a free-running master in this zombie-infested action RPG. These skills help you keep off of the streets that are filled with the undead horde. More importantly, they make traversal a lot more fun, as climbing, swinging, and jumping all feel very satisfying. The core combat isn’t bad, either, and the story is decent, too.

There have been several Deus Ex games, but the original is still often considered the best. It’s certainly the most revolutionary. After all, it is far more open and has more depth than the typical game to come out in 2000.

Every mission is about figuring out and deciding what way you want to approach the task at hand. You can sneak around people, talk your way out into places, hack your way in, or kill everyone in sight. So, there are plenty of options, as the game really helped pioneer immersive sim RPGs. The title’s RPG elements come in the form of skill points that you can use to alter your character and make you more effective at specific approaches.

Fallout: New Vegas

The later Fallout games are some of the most famous first-person RPGs. New Vegas is the best of the bunch. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland filled with mutated creatures and morally questionable individuals.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 had a difficult launch, but it’s now a much smoother experience thanks to several patches. This has allowed the true greatness of the game to shine. It is, after all, a wonderful action RPG featuring compelling characters and engaging writing. As the title suggests, it’s set in a cyberpunk world. This means you spend the game in a technologically advanced city containing bright lights and greedy corporations.

The world isn’t all bad, though, as it contains plenty of fancy equipment. You can give yourself some impressive cybernetics and hack into other people’s tech. This is very useful during combat and stealth. What’s also useful in these situations is the abundance of advanced and unique weapons in the game.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is a sci-fi RPG about humanity trying to colonize a new star system. They succeed, but not every colonizer makes it to the new world. Some of them get trapped in stasis. You’re one of those people until you’re let out at the start of the game and given the objective of gathering enough supplies to wake up the rest.

With your newfound freedom, you go on to explore the new world. It’s an interesting place, filled with some interesting people. Some of those people are your companions, who are a joy to be around and have fascinating backstories. Part of the reason they’re so good is because of the game’s quality writing. The script is both clever and comedic, which helps it elevate both the characters and the story. The general gunplay and stealth are enjoyable, too.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

There isn’t an abundance of RPGs set in the past. Some take place in fantasy worlds that are inspired by the past, but Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is one of the few actually set long ago. To be more specific, it’s set in the 15th Century in the Kingdom of Bohemia. You play as Henry, who was the son of the blacksmith and has now become a knight.

He is one of several great characters in the game. You meet the rest while exploring the title’s dense open world. Some are friends, while many others are foes. Those foes are especially problematic in this game since combat is trickier than in most RPGs. So, you’ll struggle to take on large groups of enemies at once. This gives it a more realistic feel.

Borderlands 2 is set on the chaotic planet of Pandora. It isn’t a nice place to visit, as you’d struggle to find one kind person who lives there. The planet is filled with blood-thirsty scoundrels. One of the worst is the charismatic Handsome Jack, and your goal is to bring him down.

Along with being an RPG, this game is also a looter shooter, as you continually find different gear to equip. Guns aren’t the only thing you can use against the opposition, as each character has abilities that can help, too. The gunplay and enemy variety is excellent. Yet, the game’s outrageous sense of humor is what sets it apart.
