As you explore Honolulu in Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii, you’ll encounter various NPCs just waiting to join your pirate crew on the Goromaru. These potential crew members can be found standing around the streets and bars in Honolulu, while others will only reveal themselves after helping them, usually through a substory.

Adding naval combat into Like a Dragon is a bold move that pays off incredibly well.
While the methods for finding all the best crew in Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii differ, most of the best crewmates are found via progressing the main story or completing prerequisites, like leveling up your Pirate Rank. Tank is one of the most straightforward roles to find good choices for, as two of your best options emerge via playing through the first three chapters.
Tier Level Explanation
Since there are a limited number of crew members you can recruit in Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii, the relative skills of these options are compressed.
This means that it’s clear to tell which tanks stand out as the best thanks to higher-level caps as there are not an overwhelming number of choices.
Given the relatively small roster of potential crew, there are only three tiers needed to group them accurately:
- S-Tier
- A-Tier
- All Other-Tier
S-Tier crew members stand out as unique thanks to special Squad Leader Traits, a level 50 cap, a majority of S-Tier stats, or a combination of the three factors.
A-Tier crew members are excellent additions to any squad, and while they may only cap out at level 30, or only have one S-tier stat (if any), they’re still capable of doing a job wherever you place them.
All other crew are likely to have a level cap of 20, and might not even have any additional traits. Ideally, they have at least one specialty, with a single A-tier stat that makes it simple to place them in their niche. This category does not include every other crew member in this category, just a select few worth mentioning.
There are very few exceptions to these rules, and you generally only want to use S or A-Tier crew members, if possible.
Most crew members are available via completing the main story or approaching them on the map, except Etsuko and Human Bronze Statue: Bronson.
Etsuko and Chitose’s services can be earned via exchanging points with Kamulop (15 points each), while Bronson becomes available after the Man of Bronze substory.
S-Tier Tanks
Name |
Tier |
Explanation |
---|---|---|
Taiga Saejima |
S+ |
Taiga is essentially the perfect specimen when it comes to tanks, and boasts a powerful Squad Leader Trait as well. While it’s not recommended to waste his skills in the position, he even touts a top-tier First Mate Trait that gives bonus damage against enemy sterns. |
Jason Rich |
S+ |
Much like Saejima, Jason Rich is a force to be reckoned with thanks to identical S-tier stats that make him dead even with Saejima on paper. However, Jason also has Gun Defense on his Squad Leader Trait, which is arguably as impactful as Saejima’s Stun Resistance. |
Chitose Buster Holmes |
S+ |
Chitose boasts S-ranks in both Attack and Defense, making for one of the strongest Boarding Squad members in Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. If you need another Squad Leader, Chitose is a huge help, capable of increasing Defense and Health Recovery thanks to her impressive Squad Leader Trait. |
Robo Michio Mach |
S+ |
Robo Michio Mach comes with S-tier stats in everything except for Attack, but at 385, it may as well be four S-ranks. The Robo Guard Squad Leader Trait is superb, offering extra defense and Shock Resistance to your squad. |
Robson Caetano da Silva |
S |
While Robson sits noticeably below the above titans, his Impenetrable Squad Leader Trait is a nice early-game addition before Sejima joins your crew. |
Saejima and Jason Rich are the clear leaders of the pack and are must-use tanks for your crew.
A-Tier Tanks
Name |
Tier |
Explanation |
---|---|---|
Etsuko |
A+ |
Etsuko doubles as one of the best First Mate selections in the game but also has the versatility to serve on either the Cannon Squad or Boarding Squad, making her a premier option in any position once you unlock her via Kamulop’s exchange. |
Human Bronze Statue: Bronson |
A |
Bronson’s substory is adorable and his skills on your boat are no joke, as he’s a well-rounded tank who can do an excellent job filling in anywhere, though he’s slightly more useful as a Boarding Squad tank. |
Steve |
A |
Steve is just out here doing his best, and it’s enough to warrant a spot among the best tanks. Steve is more talented on the Cannon Squad, but his excellent First Mate Trait makes him a legitimate contender for that spot. |
The competition is even tighter in A-tier, as these options all have something going for them, and can fill several holes depending on what the rest of your crew has to offer.
All Other Tanks
Name |
Tier |
Explanation |
---|---|---|
Theo |
B+ |
Theo claims an edge at the bottom of the barrel as he offers A-tier Attack and Defense, making him a solid addition to any of your Boarding Squad groups. Avoid using him on the Cannon Squad. |
Arman |
B |
Arman barely makes the list and offers the inverse skill set of Theo, as he can fill in as a Cannon Squad member much more easily. Arman doesn’t have much else to offer, so keep him on Cannon Duty and everything will work out fine. |
While these crew members don’t offer the most flexibility, they’ll fill the remaining spots in your crew well enough to not be detrimental.
