The Scream franchise is one of the most iconic in horror history. Although the original movie was released in 1996, audiences are still eagerly awaiting more stories from this world. Scream 7 will be released in the cinema on February 27, 2026, and a lot of effort has gone into making this the best installment yet.

The Scream franchise has always boasted excellent casts, with the very best young actors often being brought together to tell these stories. It has helped to establish the careers of many great stars, such as Neve Campbell while strengthening the filmography of Courtney Cox and other actors who have appeared multiple times. The reason for that is because many of the core cast members have been brought back numerous times, which allows the story to flow nicely from one movie to the next. That is set to be the case for Scream 7, as a lot of effort has been placed into creating a stellar cast that should instantly attract people to watch the movie.

Campbell and Cox are reprising their roles of Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers, while Matthew Lillard is also set to return for Scream 7. The film is set to be jam-packed with legacy characters, and it is clear that there has been a big push made to try and make this the greatest Scream movie yet. However, putting together a cast such as this doesn’t come cheaply, and that is one big reason why the film needs to be a success. If it can’t work with as many former Scream characters as this movie is boasting, making their return, then it’s hard to see how the franchise would ever continue beyond this.

Scream 7 Needs To Deliver At The Box Office

The Scream franchise is a relatively old one within the horror genre, but the reason it’s able to continue returning with new movies is because it constantly delivers box office results. This film series has grossed over $910 million globally at the box office, proving just how successful the first six movies have been with a wide range of people. Audiences are hooked on seeing Ghostface pop up and provide as many jump scares as possible, but they’re also connected to the characters and the fact that one central theme and story runs throughout the franchise. However, this is why Scream 7 must deliver at the box office because it needs to prove that Scream is still a marketable movie that people will flock to watch.

The horror genre has come a long way since Scream first slashed its way onto the big screen in 1996. Movies now lean into technology for scares or create visually freaky characters, such as Art the Clown in The Terrifier franchise. However, Scream 7 is likely going to keep things simple, with a mystery, and a villain that isn’t the most visually scary in Ghostface. That’s why the cast’s performances are so important, as that is ultimately what drives this franchise. People have to find the victims relatable, while the mystery of guessing who is Ghostface must be compelling. That is what drives people to watch Scream movies, and it must be the case again here.

A Failure Could Destroy The Scream Franchise

It was confirmed back in 2022 that Scream 7 was going to be created, but since then, it has been a rocky road for this production to get started. The SAG-AFTRA strike slowed down the process, but then Melissa Barrera was fired from the movie for social media posts, which added further issues. Jenna Ortega not being able to return due to scheduling issues on Wednesday also added further strain and worry. However, the fact that so many legacy characters are returning proves there is a level of care and attention in this film.

On the other hand, sometimes bringing back lots of former stars can be viewed as a desperate way to cling to nostalgia for the sake of connecting with older fans of the franchise. Those feelings are only heightened if the movie then underperforms at the box office. Scream 7 needs to be a success to show people still want to see the Sidney Prescott story continue and evolve, proving the decision to bring Campbell back was the right one. If the movie ends up being a flop, it could put an end to the entire franchise, as it’s hard to see where a future movie would go from here.
