Baldur’s Gate 3 might have been a surprise megahit, but the world of Dungeons and Dragons videogames has been home to stellar experiences for decades. DnD’s journey from tabletop to screen has been a long and varied one, and in all that time 2002’s Neverwinter Nights remains a classic. BioWare’s foray into the Forgotten Realms is still worth a revisit today, especially since developer Beamdog updated it with an Enhanced Edition. In fact, a new DLC just dropped for the age-old adventure, and there’s even more planned.

If you’ve beaten Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition and need a reason to return, or want to experience the RPG for the first time, the new Doom of Icewind Dale expansion is the perfect excuse. 20 years after the Hero of Neverwinter’s adventure ended, trouble comes to find them. Without their memories, abducted, and surrounded by the arctic wilds of Icewind Dale, a new threat emerges that needs to be dealt with. Typical save-the-world stuff, then.

The new Doom of Icewind Dale campaign is around 10 to 15 hours long, filled with new areas to explore, five companions to recruit, 14 more monsters to fight, and new music tracks to help immerse you along the way. Developed by prolific module creator Luke ‘Alazander’ Scull, this is an official sequel to the original Neverwinter Nights campaign, but there’s even more to come.

Scull’s been busy working on The Blades of Netheril, a 60-plus hour campaign for Neverwinter Nights that starts with the new Doom of Icewind Dale DLC. Scull calls this storyline their “final great project” over on Patreon, saying they’ve “had years to craft a story that I hope will do justice to the rich heritage of the entire line of official campaigns.

“Drawing upon my experience of the NWN toolset, my knowledge of the Forgotten Realms, and many years of planning, I intend to deliver a love letter to NWN,” Scull adds. “A huge and unforgettable Neverwinter Nights 1 campaign.”

Beamdog and Luke Scull have released Neverwinter Nights: Doom of Icewind Dale on Steam. You can purchase the expansion now at a 10% discount until Friday February 28, so expect to pay $8.99 / £7.65 until then. You’ll find the expansion right here.

This isn’t the only DnD game getting some love, however, as an updated Steam page suggests a Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition is also on the way. Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 is around the corner as well, and it’s going to be quite the send-off from Larian.

We’ve also got all the best old games to play if you want to take a trip back in time, alongside the best fantasy games if you want to be transported to an entirely new world.
