In the wild world of Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii, Goro Goro Kitchen will be the first minigame you’ll unlock. But Majima’s culinary side-hustle is so much more than a way to kill time. From the moment this activity opens up, it is the best source of recovery items. Not only that, but it is also your best way to earn money in the early game.

As Majima’s adventure progresses, so will your repertoire of recipes. By the midpoint of the game, you will be cooking meals to raise your crew’s morale, level your crew up, build your friendship with the residents of the Goro Kingdom, as well as fill your health and heat bars.

The Difficulty Of Each Recipe

Every recipe you prepare has a starting difficulty. With every additional meal attempt to prepare, you will increase the difficulty by one level. There are a total of five possible difficulties: Easy, Normal, Difficult, Very Difficult, and Insanely Difficult. As the difficulty is increased, the margin of error becomes thinner. That being said, if you use quality ingredients, then you won’t need to perform particularly well in order to produce a dish of the maximum quality (which is how you get three star dishes).

All Goro Goro Kitchen Minigames

Every recipe you prepare will involve two to three minigames (depending on the recipe). The difficulty of each of these minigames will increase with the amount of dishes you prepare at a time. No matter how many dishes you are preparing, or how high the difficulty, your aim is to fill as many of the ten circles at the bottom of the screen as possible. If the circles are gray, you will receive a tiny boost to the quality level, if the circles are green, you will receive a moderate boost, and if you fill the circles, you’ll receive a large quality boost.

While it is hard to do, if you fail so miserably that you don’t receive more than one circle, then you will actually lose a small number of quality points.

Start The Fire

This minigame wholly consists of you holding the designated button down, and releasing it when it is in the zone. The zone has two sections: The orange area grants you a good result, which will fill half of a circle, while landing in the red area gets you a great result, which will fill a circle. As the difficulty ramps up, the zone shrinks, and the cursor moves faster.

There is some acceleration to the cursor, so factor in the building speed before letting go.

Prepare Ingredients

When you are preparing the ingredients, you are provided with a string of inputs. Every string you complete will fill two circles. The faster the better, but control is more important than anything else. If you miss an input, Majima will nick himself, and you’ll be locked out from chopping vegetables for a moment. The string becomes longer and more complex with each difficulty level.

Skim The Scum

The Goro Goro Kitchen's Skim the Scum minigame.

Little puddles of scum will form along the surface of the stew; you need to ladle them out. If you press the ladle down, and hold it, it will create a vortex, sucking in the scum, but the ladle will move quite slowly. If you quickly press and release the ladle button, you will very quickly remove whatever scum is directly in the area of your ladle reticle. However, if there is scum nearby, but slightly outside that reticle, the scum will be pushed away. You can use that to group scum together.

As the difficulty increases, the scum will start to circle the pot. When this happens, you should hold the ladle down and let the scum come to you (if you have a good cluster lined up, at least). The rule of thumb is that at the lower difficulties you will want to perform quick, individual scoops, while at the higher difficulties, longer plunges will be more beneficial. Each puddle removed will increase a circle by a third or so, but if you clear out all the scum you will instantly fill all ten.

Choosing Your Ingredients

When preparing a dish, you’ll have to add the prerequisite number of ingredients. The only thing that matters here is the ingredient type and the star rating. As you add ingredients, the ‘expected quality’ rating will increase. The expected quality indicates your dish’s starting point. If you start with three stars then it is almost impossible to not end with a three star dish. You would have to catastrophically fail during the minigames.

Ideally, you should add a combination of ingredients that will start you off with two and half stars, as you can make up that half a star by performing well in the minigame section. Simply mix and match ingredients until you reach that level. Of course, at the beginning of the game you may not have access to the best ingredients, so make due with what you’ve got.

You’ll gain these ingredients by catching bugs in the wild, using planter boxes to grow vegetables, letting Goro gather meat for you, and purchasing them from shopkeepers. You can also trawl the waters as you sail to catch fish, or just go swimming at the beach and catch them with your hands. Once you obtain the Chain Hook, gathering insects will become possible. Until then, you’ll need to purchase them from shops.

A great way to get a consistent source of ingredients is to build up Goro Kingdom, as each animal will provide you with ingredients every time you feed them. For a complete breakdown of that minigame, you can read our guide here.
