Action RPG is perhaps the most popular genre in gaming. The thrill of exploring a new world, along with the wonder of discovering new loot, and engaging combat are some of the key pillars of this genre. While many games try to carve their own place in this genre, very few manage to truly innovate in this space.
Most games in the ARPG genre tend to get bogged down with meaningless stat increments and shallow loot systems, resulting in a rather generic product. With a dual-narrative approach to the story and a fast-paced multi-dimensional combat system, Duet Night Abyss looks to carve its own niche in the action RPG genre.
Engaging Combat System
The first thing that stands about Duet Night Abyss is its plethora of interesting weapons and its engaging combat system. Not only will you be able to seamlessly switch between melee and ranged weapons, but the fact that your combat skills aren’t on a cool-down means you’ll be able to master the battlefield with skill and precision.
The game’s vast cast of characters can unleash the likes of grenade launchers, assault rifles, bows, and pistols for enemies in the distance, and can whip out swords, polearms, whipsword, greatswords or other melee weapons from their arsenal to get up close and personal. With no stamina limit and a versatile traversal system, you can sprint, dash, double jump, or use unique mechanics like the Helix leap to get around the map in no time.
The Demon Wedge System Revisualizes Progression
What truly sets Duet Night Abyss’ combat system apart, however, is its Demon Wedge System. Demon Wedges are more than just modifiers. Besides giving you guaranteed stat increments when acquired or upgraded, they also fundamentally improve whatever character or weapon you attach them to. This means that you can customize characters’ attacks and skills to fit your style of play.
Some Demon Wedges will amplify your skill abilities, while others will make your melee or ranged weapons more powerful, depending on the kind of Demon Wedge you find.
You’d think that Demon Wedges would be a grind to come by, considering how powerful they are and the unique attributes they give to characters, but can be earned by completing commissions, and once found, on Demon Wedge can be used across multiple characters or weapons in the game.
All these features work in harmony to create a combat and progression system that emphasizes on fun and customization over luck and grinding. You won’t have to bang your head against the wall until you put together a build that finally suits your play style.
A Two-Pronged Narrative Approach
Combat and progression aren’t the only highlights of Duet Night Abyss. The game features a deep story about suffering, war, and humanity. While we won’t give you any spoilers here, you’ll experience the narrative through the eyes of two separate protagonists. Only when you complete their respective paths is when you’ll understand the full picture.
Duet Night Abyss will feature full English, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese voiceovers with a large roster of voice actors. However, the unique character design is what really sets the characters apart. Each of them have their own demon elements, featuring horns and an exposed spine, due to which they’re known as Demon’s Children.
A Revolutionary Take On The Action RPG Genre
With a unique approach to combat, progression, and even the narrative, Duet Night Abyss has managed to create its own niche in the action RPG genre. It doesn’t get bogged down by typical ARPG tropes and brings fresh ideas that revitalize the category. With a closed beta test scheduled for February 20, Duet Night Abyss is ready to change the game.
