Summary

  • One of Sonic’s most iconic catchphrases, “you’re too slow” comes from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • The phrase hasn’t been said by the character since then, but it’s finally back thanks to CrossWorlds.
  • Interestingly, this marks the first time that Sonic has said “you’re too slow” in his own series.

Sonic‘s infamously annoying “you’re too slow” taunt from Super Smash Bros. has finally made its debut in the Blue Blur’s own series thanks to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

As Sonic himself made clear in his third live-action movie, the super-speed hedgehog has got a lot of catchphrases. Although he’s perhaps best known for “gotta go fast”, the one that sticks out in the mind of most gamers is undoubtedly “you’re too slow”.

The infamous and endlessly irritating quote comes from one of Sonic’s taunts in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and was quickly turned into a meme. Despite how iconic it became, it was strangely removed from Sonic’s quotes in Smash Wii U and Ultimate, and hasn’t really been a part of his character since then.

Sonic Has Finally Brought Back His Most Annoying Taunt

That sad situation has finally changed thanks to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, which is currently in the middle of its network test. Players have been diving into the game over the past few days and have found that, just like previous Sonic Racing games, there are a ton of interactions between characters.

As great as it is to see Shadow act surprisingly nice to Amy while berating Sonic every chance he gets, by far the best voice line that’s been found in the game so far isn’t a specific interaction at all. As pointed out by Twitter user Soul1711, Sonic has a chance of saying “you’re too slow” to the other racers in CrossWorlds.

It’s not clear if there’s a specific way to trigger the voice line, but its inclusion is interesting for a number of reasons. The obvious one is simply that Sonic hasn’t said it since Smash Brawl 17 years ago, while the other reason is that this is the first time it’s appeared in an official Sega game.

Combine that with the fact that this is Roger Craig Smith’s first time saying the line (as Sonic was voiced by Jason Griffith in Brawl), and it makes what appears to be an ordinary quote quite a special moment for fans. I have no idea why it’s taken so long for Sega to bring it back, but as a Smash fan, I couldn’t be happier.
