Summary

  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows is being played a month before launch.
  • This is due to some physical copies circulating in online marketplaces.
  • At least one person with an early copy is sharing gameplay footage online, and fans fear further leaks.

Physical copies of Assassin’s Creed Shadows appear to have been sold early, as some are already playing the game. At least one of these players has started sharing screenshots and videos of their gameplay online, as fans fear that spoilers will leak long before the game’s launch.

This all comes almost a month before the release date of March 20, so this is a major issue for Ubisoft. It’s unclear just how many copies are out in the wild right now, but listings are being found on online marketplaces.

Someone Is Already Sharing Assassin’s Creed Shadows Gameplay Online

They say they won’t share spoilers, but others may not be so considerate

User @DannyStevens__ shared that they had a physical copy earlier this evening, showing a picture of the box art and the installation screen on PS5. While this wouldn’t be proof enough, they have since started sharing images and videos of the game in action, so it certainly seems that this is the real deal.

They claim to have picked the game up on Facebook Marketplace, although it’s unclear what the original source is. Others appear to have found it being resold online too, with one listing on Mercari claiming to have access to multiple copies of the game, although they have all sold out. Each copy was sold for $100.

A store lisitng for copies of Assassin's Creed Shadows, being sold for $100, a month for release date

Ubisoft has not commented on these leaks, nor the store listing for physical copies of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. @DannyStevens__ says they don’t want to share any spoilers, but with multiple copies seemingly out in the wild, it’s possible that the next leaker won’t be as considerate towards fans.

Ultimately, this is just the latest issue facing Assassin’s Creed Shadows in the run-up to its launch. It’s already been hit with multiple delays, as Ubisoft is eager to avoid another underperformance like Star Wars Outlaws. Amidst all of this, Ubisoft has rolled out layoffs, with 185 employees recently losing their jobs.

That isn’t even touching on how Assassin’s Creed Shadows has become one of the most prominent targets of an online hate campaign, which kicked off as soon as Yasuke was revealed to be one of the player characters. Due to this, Ubisoft has had to defend the game from racist abuse online.
