Summary
- The Straw Hat crew is complete with 10 members, each fulfilling a crucial role on the ship.
- Adding new members at this stage of the series would be unnecessary and disrupt the crew’s dynamic.
- Potential future Straw Hats include Vivi, Carrot, Yamato, and even Loki, but fans debate who will join.
The Straw Hats are arguably the most iconic hero group in the entire anime industry. At this point in the One Piece story, if anything were to happen to even one of them, the crew just wouldn’t be the same since every member fits a specific role on the ship, without which the entirety of the pirate crew can’t function the same way. Although some roles are naturally more important than others, each is integral to keeping the crew going.
Along the journey, Luffy and the others have met many new people who have often joined the crew after them. As such, Luffy has also gone on to promise many that they have a permanent spot on the ship in the future, and fans have always been going wild with theories about who One Piece’s final Straw Hat could be. However, some feel that the Straw Hats shouldn’t have any new members, so let’s see why this is.

The Straw Hats were formed at the very start of the One Piece story, where a clueless and ambitious kid named Monkey D. Luffy set out into the ocean in a rowboat with nothing other than a Straw Hat to his name. He had no idea where he was going or what he was even doing, only that his dream was to become the King of the Pirates and that he wanted a crew that would help him in realizing this dream.
Eventually, Luffy came across Roronoa Zoro and Nami, with whom he officially began his crew, which would later become known as the Straw Hats. From these humble beginnings, these pirates would bolster their numbers and gather their strength, eventually growing to become one of the world’s most infamous and powerful crews, under the captaincy of the newest Emperor of the Sea, Luffy. However, this is where the point of contention lies with adding a new member to the crew.
Firstly, in some of the first panels of the entire One Piece manga, Luffy expressed his desire to create a sizable pirate crew that would be like a new family to him. Here, he stated that there should be a total of 10 members since that is what makes it a proper group. At the current stage, there are now 10 crew members of the Straw Hat Pirates, which fulfills Luffy’s dream of having such a crew as well as Oda’s vision for it.
Most importantly, however, every single member of the crew right now has a set role on the pirate ship, and while some may seem less important than others, they are all vital for the crew operating at full efficiency. As far as the story has shown, every role on the pirate ship has been filled, and there is nothing more that needs to be added. The roles are as such:
- Captain – Luffy
- First Mate – Zoro
- Navigator – Nami
- Cook – Sanji
- Sniper – Usopp
- Doctor – Chopper
- Archaeologist – Robin
- Shipwright – Franky
- Helmsman – Jinbei
- Musician – Brook
A pirate crew is like a family!
As far as fans know, there is nothing more that is needed for a pirate crew. So, adding anyone more on top of this would be entirely useless to the crew at large and would only serve to have friends that the Straw Hats have made along the way to be with their friends until the foreseeable future. While this is amazing to think about in terms of how much fun the characters would have, it doesn’t make much sense besides that fact.
Moreover, One Piece has already entered its Final Saga and the end of the series is closer now than it has ever been before. In that sense, adding anyone to the crew at this stage wouldn’t really change or add anything, since they wouldn’t have any time to properly spend with the others and would only really be doing so for fan service. Plus, there are a ton of options as to who could be the potential final member, so it seems that adding someone else would be a bit unfair in the eyes of fans of the others.

Who Are The Potential Future Straw Hats?
Many Candidates Exist
The identity of the final Straw Hat, who many believe that there will be one more member of the crew, has been a topic of debate for years. The clear frontrunner for this role is Nefeltari Vivi, who had been a part of the crew for quite a long time over some very important arcs but eventually got off to claim her role as the Princess of Alabasta. Despite this, many believe that others hold the same chances, particularly Carrot and Yamato.
Carrot was a surprise addition to the Straw Hats for around the same amount of time as Vivi was and Yamato was promised to join the crew eventually but chose to hold off to protect Momonosuke, who was also teased as a future member. Shockingly, many fans also believe that Loki may eventually join the crew as well, since it is hinted that he may not be as evil as he chooses to portray himself as and will be a hero by the end of the Elbaf arc.
