TMNT action figures have been around for decades now. For every new animated series or movie, there’s a plethora of new toys rolled out for kids and adults alike to gobble up. But as far as I’m concerned, there’s never been Ninja Turtles toys that look as awesome as these Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black and White Comic Book Figures.

There’s no doubt that plenty of folks out there fondly look back on the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series and recall it as the property that started the foursome’s phenomenal rise. In reality though, the franchise drew its first breath in 1984 as a gritty black and white comic book created by the duo of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. This collection from Playmates Toys – currently 56% off – does an incredible job of honoring the half-shell heroes’ history.

IDW has been publishing high-quality comics since 1999, but what are the best comics they’ve published?

Not only do you get each of the four turtles in the Black and White Comic Book Figures collection, Playmates also throws in some cool bonuses as well. An exclusive comic book comes with the collection, so fans can get a first-hand feel for how the Turtles originated via Eastman and Laird’s iconic comics. Each of the individually packaged turtles comes with a collector’s card that’s true to their original black and white design. Plus, for collectors that never intend to remove the heroes from their packaging, the boxes themselves are incredibly detailed to replicate the tone of the original comic run.

In their original comic book incarnation, the turtles were essentially identical. Each of the four heroes donned a red bandanna at the time, so there was no differentiating them based upon blue, red, orange, and purple coloring. Instead, the only thing readers had to go on were the individual weapons each of them would wield. Playmates took some liberties in that regard with the Black and White Comic Book Figures.

Playmates’ monochromatic foursome have a bit more individuality in action figure form compared to their comic counterparts. You’ll notice that each of the action figures’ chests has abrasions built into their shell appearance that can be used to tell them apart, if you pay enough attention to detail. On top of that, each one of the four turtles sports a unique facial expression too. It’s not much, but there are delineations in their designs, should the heroes not be holding their weapons of choice.

If you and the kids have no interest in admiring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black and White Comic Book Figures from a far, they appear to perform just like all the other Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures you played with in your youth. Each one moves with points of articulation that you’re used to. And, of course, Leonardo comes with his katana swords, Donatello his bo staff, Michaelangelo his dual nunchucks, and Raphael rocks dual-fisted sais.
