Doom: The Dark Ages‘ developers have confirmed in a recent interview that the game won’t allow you to dash or double jump like you could in Eternal.

When it was first announced, Doom: The Dark Ages looked like it’d be, well, just more Doom. That wouldn’t have been a bad thing at all considering how great 2016’s reboot and Eternal were, but it turns out that it’s doing quite a lot differently than the previous games.

Doom is a simple game with a simple objective, and multiplayer complicates that.

When The Dark Ages was highlighted at Xbox’s Developer Direct, it became clear that id Software is aiming for a more grounded approach than Eternal, with movement looking a lot less bouncy and fluid. That’s now been confirmed outright by the developers, who removed a few features from Eternal.

As highlighted by ResetEra user Rychu and Twitter user klobrille, Doom: The Dark Ages is the cover game this month for Edge Magazine. Edge had the chance to speak with the game’s developers, who went into detail on all of the changes that have been made for the prequel.

While it’s great to hear about level length and why the plot is so important this time around, the juiciest bits of the preview come from the details about the Shield Saw. While explaining the Shield’s utility, id confirmed that there is no double jump or dash option in the game, as the focus is instead on being able to shield bash.

It’s not clear why the Shield’s functionality means the loss of double jumping and dashing, but it does suggest a lot less verticality during combat. Double jumping was featured in both Doom 2016 and Eternal, while dashing around was added in the sequel, which was much more focused on movement as a whole.

Time will tell what these changes mean for Doom’s combat flow, but what we’ve seen of The Dark Ages so far has been very positive. A big part of that is the impressive Shield Saw, so it might not be such a bad thing that the mechanical focus was placed there instead of on hopping around.
