Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night

Metroidvanias Would Not Exist Without This Game

No matter how much time passes and how many stellar Metroidvanias come out, nothing will ever top the experience of playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the first time in 1997. It was that fresh and new at the time and a huge reason to own a PlayStation over the Nintendo 64.

Sure, Metroid established the core game design of the genre with the open map and backtracking, but Symphony brought RPG mechanics along with a significantly more fleshed-out story than anything seen before in Metroid. Symphony of the Night has to be one of the most important games ever released on the PS1, and frankly, it still holds up pretty well among the best Metroidvanias of today.

A Timeless Masterpiece

When you go back to retro games, sometimes they don’t hold up — take Shenmue, for example. However, the original Metal Gear Solid might be the best-aged game of all time. To this day, the gameplay, writing, voice acting, music, and presentation remain effective all these years later. Even compared to the sequels, MGS1 shines in its superior writing and smaller scale compared to the likes of MGS2 and 4, which are massive in scope.

This is thanks to the amazing work of translator Jeremy Blaustein, who did a phenomenal job reworking the original Japanese script, but Hideo Kojima didn’t like the various changes. However, this is what makes MGS1 so great. If there’s one game that defines the PS1, it’s Metal Gear Solid.

Jak 2

One Of The Greatest Platformers Of The Era

The original Jak and Daxter was a great game, but Jak 2 completely evolved the series. In what was a risky move, Jak 2 had a darker tone, but it didn’t feel off within its animated universe. It was dark in the right ways, and the gameplay remained stellar with more of an action focus, similar to Ratchet & Clank.

Jak 2 proved to be a technical marvel as well. The PlayStation 2 was when many developers started to hide and optimize loading, and Jak 2 is a perfect example. Sometimes, you’ll just trip and slowly get back up, and that’s actually a loading screen. Nobody would think that, but this impressive magic trickery for the time shows why Jak 2 has to be one of the greatest PlayStation games of all time.

God Of War

One Of The Best Games Ever Crafted

Some game series improve with their sequels, while others just can’t beat the original. The classic 2005 God of War remains the best title in the series. Its sheer creative spark, taking elements from Devil May Cry, Zelda, and a larger-than-life Greek mythology world, results in a campaign that’s still just as epic, grandiose, and phenomenal to play today as it did in 2005.

You can tell the PS2 was struggling with these beasts, as performance tanked during the encounters, but that’s where the stellar PS4 remake comes in, which has to be the best way to play this all-time great today.

Hideki Kamiya is an iconic Japanese game director known for action game staples like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, but his best game isn’t an action title at all. Okami is Capcom’s answer to The Legend of Zelda, but the quality of Okami far exceeds that of every other Zelda clone out there. Even within the Zelda series, it would easily be a top three 3D Zelda game.

You have a great cast of likable characters who go on a long epic journey rivaling that of the best of what 3D Zelda has to offer with amazing dungeons, better writing than any of the Zelda games, its own unique battle system, and a timeless art style that will always look good. The game’s an absolute must-play for anyone, and it’s thankfully getting a sequel with Kamiya returning.

Many people’s favorite Soulslike game is Bloodborne, but that title would never have existed without Demon’s Souls. One of the most culturally and historically significant games of the decade, Demon’s Souls still stands out today among all the other FromSoftware titles.

It’s truly hardcore, with limited healing items that don’t automatically replenish, and the infamous World Tendency system makes the game harder each time you die in human form. The game just has a brash, not giving a damn attitude that still hasn’t been replicated. It also helps that Demon’s Souls has a full-blown remake that plays amazingly at 4K 60fps on the PS5 Pro, compared to Bloodborne, which is hard to go back to at 30fps with no native PC or PS5 version.

Some game settings aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but even if you’re not a fan of Westerns and find the outdoors boring, Red Dead Redemption 2 will blow you away. The open world is jaw-droppingly good, with a huge size, attention to detail, great exploration, and probably the best use of animals in any game to date.

The gameplay has massively improved with significantly better AI and mechanics, such as the overhaul of using human shields. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the first big triple-A RPG that not only had all the high marks present in the genre, but it had stellar animation quality where usually that gets tossed aside. Baldur’s Gate 3 is the next evolution of that. Despite the ginormous amount of content here, Baldur’s Gate 3 retains that high visual and animation quality, plus it retains the core D&D roleplaying groundwork.

The sheer number of choices and pathways in this game is wild, and not one bit of it feels half-assed or clumsily put together. The only negative some may have is that the game’s based on fifth edition D&D, which isn’t everyone’s favorite, but besides that, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a top three RPG of all time.
