The magical world of Shogi has returned in Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii. For the uninitiated, Shogi is like chess, but different. Shogi is something of a Like A Dragon staple, and essentially exists as two minigames in this iteration. There is the ranked challenge mode, where you will participate in Shogi matches against NPCs, and there is the Puzzle Shogi mode, where you will be tasked with getting a checkmate in a limited number of moves.

This guide will give you a quick rundown on what you need to know about Shogi. We’ll tell you how it differs from chess, and provide you with a quick reference for the different pieces and how they move. We will also provide you with the solutions for all ten of the Puzzle Shogi problems.

Where Is The Shogi Minigame Located?

The Shogi minigame is played by interacting with the man sitting on a blanket, camped out behind the shrine in Honolulu. The shrine is located between Fuji Street and Sakura Street.

Differences Between Chess And Shogi

The short and sweet of it is that Shogi is chess with a few alterations. You are still trying to capture you opponent’s king, and most of the pieces operate the same way. Shogi is a variation of chess afterall. However, there are some pretty notable differences as well…

• Unlike in chess, you can promote any piece by getting to the back three rows of your opponent’s playfield. Instead of being able to swap pieces out for a queen, bishop, knight, or rook, pieces have an upgraded form. As an example, the bishop will maintain its ability to attack on a diagonal line, but it’ll also gain the ability to attack all around them like a king.
• Castling is not an option in Shogi, so you can’t swap your king with a rook.
• If you capture an opponent’s piece, you can then deploy it as one of your own. However, while you can place it anywhere on the board, you cannot place it in a tile if it would cause a checkmate.

There are, of course, other differences, but outside of a few pieces acting differently (which we will cover in the next section), those are the big ones.

All Shogi Pieces And Their Movement Patterns

Before we start, don’t get too hung up on the kanji. We know it can be a touch overwhelming. So, pawns are marked with a “P”, bishops are marked with a “B”, rooksare marked with a “R”, etc.

Move your silver general one space forward. Do NOT promote this piece.

Place the knight in your reserve pool next to your general.

Move your rook one tile forward and then promote it.

Puzzle Shogi 4 Solution

Place your general on the tile that is diagonal from the enemy’s king.

Move your promoted rook forward one space on a diagonal to the right.

Move your pawn one space forward and promote it, then, place your silver general to the left of the enemy’s king.

Place your silver general next to your enemy’s silver general. Now, move your bishop in front of the enemy’s king and promote them.

Place your general from the captured pieces area next to your opponent’s knight. They will take your piece with their bishop. Now, place your silver general next to their bishop.

Place your bishop in the captured pieces area on the tile in front of the enemy’s silver general. Their silver general will take your bishop. Now, place your general from your captured pieces area beside their king.
