Summary

  • Some fans believe Persona 4 vocalist Shihoko Hirata has been hinting at the game’s remake as of late.
  • Hirata was recently working on an unannounced game in a Tokyo recording studio often used by Atlus.
  • Several leakers have claimed that a Persona 4 remake was already in the pipeline as of early 2024.

Some Atlus fans have recently taken note of one Persona 4 vocalist, whose social media activity has sparked speculation that a remake of the iconic JRPG is in the works. While this idea has already gained quite a bit of online momentum, the underlying evidence pointing to a Persona 4 remake is circumstantial, at best.

July 10 will mark the 17th anniversary of the fourth numbered Persona game‘s PS2 release. Its immediate predecessor was also 17 years old when it received a remake in the form of Persona 3 Reload, which debuted back in February 2024. That’s not to say that a Persona 4 remake is expected to materialize in the immediate future, but there’s been some chatter about Atlus possibly pursuing such a project as of late.

Persona 6 May Not Be Able to Get Away with the Same Twist Persona 5 Pulled

One of the biggest twists in Persona 5 is one that Persona 6 would almost certainly not be able to pull off again to the same effect.

In the latest example of this trend, fans have started scrutinizing some social media activity by Persona 4 vocalist Shihoko Hirata, interpreting it as hints that the game’s remake may already be in the pipeline. As noted by Twitter user Rudiger__tw in a widely circulated post, Hirata has recently revealed that she’s working on an unannounced game, all the while posting pictures from the MIT Studio, a recording facility in Tokyo’s Minato ward that’s often used by Sega subsidiaries, including Atlus. Rudiger__tw also identified multiple instances of Hirata liking Persona 4 posts as of late, interpreting them as possible hints at a potential revival of the cult-classic JRPG.

Persona 4 Remake Rumors Have Been Heating Up Since 2024

While some casual Instagram posts are hardly conclusive evidence of anything, Hirata’s recent social media activity isn’t the first indicator that Atlus might be planning to revisit its 2008 JRPG. Back in February 2024, Sega leaker Midori claimed that a Persona 4 remake was already in the pipeline at the time, adding that Atlus was also working on remaking the Persona 2 duology. Another leaker known as Head on the Block subsequently claimed that the Persona 2 project was a remaster, while characterizing the Persona 4 remake as being in an extremely early stage of development—and thus years away from going gold.

After Persona 3 Reload, a Persona 4 Remake Looks Like a Slam Dunk

Persona 4 remake rumors started heating up around the time Persona 3 Reload hit the market. The 2024 JRPG surpassed 1 million sales in less than a week, becoming the fastest-selling Atlus game at the time—a title that has since been taken by Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Following the immense success of Persona 3 Reload, a refresh of the fourth numbered entry in the franchise seems like a safe bet for Sega and Atlus. However, even if such a project is indeed in the works, it seems unlikely to hit the market before Persona 6, which is already believed to have been in the works for years.
