How To Start The Giant Squid Boss Fight

The Esperanza Treasure Island before the Giant Squid Battle in Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii.

Once you’ve defeated Mortimer and freed Tucker from his temporary prison on Madlantis, you can talk to him and set your course for the secret location of the Esperanza Treasure.

Once there, you’re instructed by Tucker to fire your cannons at a small area on the island’s edge, revealing the secret entrance.

However, revealing the entrance also awakens the powerful guardian of the treasure: a Giant Squid.

This boss is swift and extremely dangerous up close. You’ll need to rely on careful sailing and precise attacks to defeat this foe.

How To Defeat The Giant Squid

As soon as the fight begins, the Giant Squid will submerge beneath the water, relocating itself to another area of the battlefield.

Once the Giant Squid reappears, head straight for it and focus your machine gun fire at its tentacles while avoiding its dangerous attack patterns.

How To Attack The Giant Squid

You must attack the tentacles first, or you will not be able to inflict significant damage on the Giant Squid.

With the first set of two tentacles down, turn your attention to the beast’s eyes and hit them with your cannons to inflict massive damage.

The best way to accelerate the fight is by using your boosts and drifting to quickly reposition yourself so you can use your charged cannon side (port or starboard) to do maximum damage.

How To Defend Against The Giant Squid

Complete a second phase of the tentacle and eye attacks while avoiding the squid’s ink attack, which fires in a long telegraphed line that you can easily avoid using your Fuel Tank boosts.

You should invest heavily in the following Goromaru Ship Upgrades (in this order) to give yourself the best chance to win the fight:

  1. Hull Durability Extreme
  2. Laser Cannons (Port and Starboard)
  3. Fuel Tank Increases
  4. Additional Repairs

If you get too close to the Giant Squid, it will swing at you with its tentacles and damage the Goromaru.

The key to this fight is maintaining proper positioning.

Try to stay just out of the Giant Squid’s tentacle range at all times, while remaining close enough to connect with your cannon shots.

As you’re getting into range for your cannons to hit, avoid the mortar-like attacks by speed boosting past the marked red spots, and steer clear of the warning markers that appear in the water.

The Giant Squid will also fire a four-pronged water attack when you’re at medium range, which is very difficult to fully avoid without speed boosting well before it reaches you.

Ultimately, doing more damage by quickly circling the beast and drifting to change sides while your cannons charge is best. This is so you can unleash both sides of the cannons in one phase.

After about three or four rounds, the Giant Squid boss will be defeated, opening your path into the newly-opened cave entrance and the Esperanza Treasure.
