A Final Fantasy fan crafted a stained-glass ornament of one of the franchise’s most distinct critters, the Tonberry, and shared their handiwork on social media. The Final Fantasy fan artist also shared that the Tonberry handicraft had a swinging lantern, and other fans complimented them on their effort and attention to detail.
Since its debut in Final Fantasy 5, the Tonberry is a monster that has plagued adventurers who underestimate its small stature. With a green body and a shabby cloak, the Tonberry is never seen without its lantern and Chef’s Knife. Although the Tonberry is usually a slow-moving creature, it can instantly kill any party member who gets too close, with a simple “Doink!” from its knife to indicate a direct hit. The Tonberry can cast curses and dark magic with its lantern, which can inflict debilitating debuffs and make defeating or running from it more difficult. In the Final Fantasy expansion for Magic: The Gathering, the Tonberry will appear as a Creature card that costs one Black Mana.

Despite its reputation as one of the scariest monsters in the Final Fantasy franchise, the Tonberry remains a popular art subject. On the /r/FinalFantasy subreddit, an Irish Redditor named Significant_Tough751 shared a slow-motion video of a stained-glass Tonberry ornament they crafted. Significant_Tough751 said they made the Tonberry figure for an upcoming convention they plan to trade at. The Tonberry’s head, hands, and tail were painted green, and most of the figure was stained light brown due to the Tonberry’s cloak and hood.

The Tonberry’s knife and boots were painted gray, and its lantern had a red flame. Significant_Tough751 attached small interlocking hoops to the Tonberry’s hand and lantern, which allowed the lantern to swing sideways. The Tonberry was attached to a small string for easy handling and placement on a wall.
Although the Tonberry is not a playable race in any Final Fantasy game, that has not stopped fans and artists from paying tribute to it. Significant_Tough751 stated that the Tonberry is slightly smaller than a sheet of A4 paper. Compared to the commonly used 8.5 x 11-inch printer paper, an A4 sheet is 8.2 x 11.69 inches. The artist said that their Tonberry figures are on sale for €150, and they can make other commission pieces that ship internationally.
Between being an adorable mascot and a tough enemy to take down, the Tonberry is as ubiquitous in Final Fantasy as Chocobos and Moogles. Only time will tell when the Tonberry will make its next appearance in the series.
