Fantasy survival game Nightingale introduces long-awaited customization options

Nightingale has had a rocky first year. Its gorgeous ‘gaslamp fantasy’ world invites you to travel across realms and fight all manner of weird and wonderful creatures as you create your dream estate. But its launch was hampered by a lack of direction, clunky tutorials, and restrictive build limits. Since then, however, developer Inflexion Games has been making regular improvements to the survival game including a brand-new campaign and dramatic upgrades to your construction capacity. Now, as it celebrates its one-year anniversary, one of the most-requested Nightingale features is finally here.

The Nightingale anniversary update adds new dyes, customization options, and tilesets to the survival game. Nightingale’s greatest strength is in its design – the distinctive mix of fantasy, steampunk, and Victorian elements creates some really unique and memorable locations and creatures – so it’s no surprise that the player base has been calling for ways to customize their own look to fit into the world. When I spoke with Inflexion last year, CEO Aaryn Flynn told me he wanted to bring its sense of style more to the forefront.

With the new update, you’ll now be able to head to the Glamor Station and alter the materials and colors of your clothing, gear, and weapons. You won’t need to do anything else to activate this; it’ll be available as soon as the station is unlocked. Whenever you acquire an item with a specific characteristic affecting its appearance, that characteristic will be permanently unlocked for use moving forward.

As an example, if you get your hands on a ‘gold’ item then you will be able to use the dye system to apply the gold color to metals. Inflexion notes that the system does not work retroactively, so you’ll need to start finding new items, although you can re-collect things you already have to unlock their particular features. If you’re in the endgame, you can also head to the clothing vendor in The Watch to find bundles of appearances for sale.

Alongside this comes a range of additional decoration options for both you and your base. The Wrangler outfit gives you another clothing set, this time inspired by the Wild West, and you can complement it by building something with the rugged new Frontier tileset. There are also fresh furniture sets to be found among the Crude and Tudor tilesets.

Alongside this is a new card-matching mini-game that you can play against NPC survivors. There’s the option to gamble your Essence in matches against various characters in the world, if you think you’re up to the challenge. You’ll also find more bug fixes and some additional upgrades such as distinct looks for every tier of plant fiber and improved sprinting among the full patch notes, courtesy of Inflexion Games.
