Despite being years away from seeing the light of day, Fallout 5 is a game many are eagerly awaiting. It’s been nearly 10 years since the last mainline entry, and there’s no telling when Fallout 5 will arrive. It hopefully won’t be too long, but while the wait continues, there is plenty of room for speculation on what the story could have in store.
One thing seems nearly for certain, though. No matter what changes are implemented in the next game, Fallout 5 is set to showcase a variety of post-apocalyptic factions. The many factions of Fallout have become some of the most fascinating points of lore within the story, and it will be exciting to see what unique groups Fallout 5 introduces to the canon. Every entry in the series could serve as great inspiration, but New Vegas‘ Yes Man could be a strong blueprint to inspire a new independent faction.

The in-development Horizon MMO spin-off has been kept tightly under wraps, but Fallout 76 could be the perfect setting inspiration.
Yes Man’s Role as Independent New Vegas’ Spokesperson Makes Him a Unique Character
In New Vegas, Yes Man is an AI programmed to serve as Benny’s assistant and will help the Courier in the fight for the city. This character is the official representative of Independent New Vegas, and, as the name suggests, it’s a side players can join in order to give New Vegas freedom from the other main factions. Since Yes Man is programmed to agree with everything the Courier does, the character can make for some hilarious moments, but more importantly, a figure that helps represent an independent path is something that could be great to reuse in Fallout 5.
In New Vegas, players can side either with Independent New Vegas, Robert House, New California Republic, or Caesar’s Legion as the main factions.
Fallout 5 Should Offer an Independent Faction
One of the most interesting aspects of each Fallout game is that they require players to choose between various factions that hold important roles in every game’s story. These factions showcase the moral variety that exists in each new wasteland. Some groups are working toward noble pursuits, like Fallout 4‘s Minutemen, while others are downright deplorable, like New Vegas‘ Caesar’s Legion.
This wide variety of moral viewpoints makes the world of Fallout that much more lifelike, and New Vegas‘ embrace of an independent choice expands the options that players are able to consider. If Fallout 5 takes note of New Vegas, a new character inspired by Yes Man doesn’t exactly have to be the same type of persona. Another cheery, and sometimes hilariously passive-aggressive, robot would clearly be recycling an old concept, but a fresh face that can showcase an independent faction feels necessary.
Season 2 of Amazon Prime’s Fallout series has teased a return to New Vegas, marking the first time the franchise has showcased the city since the game.
An Independent Faction Can Offer Even More Moral Flexibility
Just because players choose to side with Yes Man in New Vegas doesn’t mean that it’s a happy ending. Independence can be interpreted in a variety of ways, and this path gives the player the power to decide what that personally means to them. On the one hand, Independent New Vegas represents unbound freedom, but on the other hand, that can be corrupted, depending on how one plays the Courier. Yes, New Vegas is technically free, but now the Courier has the power to be New Vegas’ overlord. Also, the Mojave region outside the city is left without organized leadership, which could potentially result in chaos.
New Vegas‘ Yes Man could be a strong blueprint to inspire a new independent faction.
This adds a whole new layer of moral complexity, and Fallout 5 could really benefit from that. Not only does it offer more options, it’s simply more realistic, which is only beneficial for an RPG. There’s no telling what Fallout 5 has to offer, but when that day comes, its factions will be tasked with bringing its story to life.
