When you cast your mind back to the year 2000, the defining RTS games of the era are likely names such as Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2, or the slightly earlier StarCraft: Brood War. But if you had a PlayStation at the time, you might have been playing classics such as Team Buddies. Originally developed by Psygnosis, if you want to get your hands on an original copy via eBay today, you’ll be looking at a price tag of more than $100. But out of nowhere, a listing for a full remaster of Team Buddies has just mysteriously appeared on Steam.
The new Steam page for Team Buddies describes it as a fully remastered version of the classic RTS game. It promises to offer “enhanced 4K visuals with optimized graphics” alongside the option to switch to the game’s original look. Developer Kaeru Interactive lists support for online play, including cross-platform multiplayer and a new ‘reborn mode’ featuring “a revamped experience with larger maps, an expanded weapon selection, and even more frenetic combat.”
For those of you who missed it at the time, the core hook of Team Buddies lies in strategic crate stacking, which is much more interesting than it initially sounds. Your team of warriors can find boxes across the map and bring them to special zones in your base, where you can combine them in unique ways to determine what equipment you’ll get when you cash them in.
Place a single crate and break it, and you’ll get yourself a small weapon such as a pistol or uzi. Two crates side-by-side will earn you grenades, but two stacked vertically will spawn an additional buddy to help you out. Put down four in a flat square and you can grab a bazooka, or create a full eight-crate cube and you’ll be the proud owner of a vehicle such as a tank or battle mech.
You must therefore make careful use of the crafting tools to create the right gear in order to successfully defend your base, coordinate your attacks, and grab control of key strategic points on the battlefield. It’s a clever spin on team-based strategy, and a real throwback.
