ASUS has announced a new “Fragrance Mouse” that will let users enjoy scents while they use their computer. It’s an unusual creation, though the ASUS mouse may appeal to some types of PC users.
When it comes to computer mice, general PC users and gamers can find just about anything they need or want, whether it’s high DPI, cool lighting effects, or wireless connectivity. PC peripheral companies try to do things that set their mice apart in a market burgeoning with competition, but this is certainly an unusual twist.

ASUS has revealed its MD101 Fragrance Mouse, which contains a compartment that can house aromatic oils that can then emit that scent. The mouse vial is housed in the bottom of the mouse and can be removed, filled, and washed out as needed. The compact mouse is wireless, and can function with either 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth, with an estimated 10-million click lifespan and up to a year’s worth of battery life, utilizing a single AA battery. The mouse is launching with an option between an iridescent white or rose clay color, and includes an adjustable sensitivity with options of DPI 1200, 1600, and 2400.ASUS has yet to announce a price or release date for its new Fragrance Mouse.
The Scent Choice is Up to the User
Rather than selling scent cartridges or requiring ASUS-branded oils, users should be able to use just about any scent they desire with this mouse. However, ASUS notes that 100% pure essential oils should not be used in the device, and users should instead use essential oils that are designed for devices like diffusers and aroma stones. While this mouse could theoretically be used for any purpose, general PC users are likely the target audience here, and not gamers. The mouse doesn’t have any additional buttons for using macros or hotkeys. The sensitivity is far below the DPI many gaming mice offer, as well.
Aromatherapy is quite popular, so this may appeal to some PC users, especially those who want to remain calm and relaxed while working or simply browsing the web. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that ASUS has tinkered with the idea of integrating scents into its products. Among the many ASUS laptop offerings, one was previously revealed that contained a fragrance dispenser in the lid, though that one was less flexible, as it required a certain type of fragrance puck. However, it’s easy to see how that might work better than a container for fragrance oils, as there’s little to no risk of leaks potentially damaging one’s work station or the device itself. It will be interesting to see if ASUS finds success and continues this trend, or if it’s seen by consumers as a simple gimmick and fails to take off.
