Minecraft‘s upcoming spring drop will do a lot to make the game’s biomes more immersive, introducing some more variation between hot and cold regions. However, when it comes to the colder parts of a Minecraft world, there’s one mob that’s long been left behind.
Mojang has continued expanding Minecraft‘s next game drop, an update designed to make the game’s world more lively and more immersive. In addition to new ambient noises, particle effects, and a variety of new foliage blocks, including the return of fireflies via the firefly bush, Minecraft will receive more variation between hot, cold, and temperate regions. This has mainly manifested in the form of biome-based reskins, with new variants for chickens, cows, and pigs (as well as new spawning conditions for sheep).

Minecraft’s Snow Golem Needs More Love
When it comes to talking about temperature in Minecraft, there’s one mob that often gets overlooked. The Snow Golem, added back in 2011, undoubtedly has a place in the hearts of veteran players, but its use cases are few, especially when compared to Minecraft‘s Iron Golem, a powerful combat ally and the core component of iron farms. Snow Golems are cheap to make, but deal no damage, die in hot areas, and only have four health. Despite their status as little more than a novelty, this mob is overflowing with potential, and giving it a little overhaul would mesh perfectly with the upcoming spring drop.
Minecraft’s Snow Golem Has A Great Deal Of Potential
Despite not seeing overwhelming use among players, Snow Golems actually have more quirks than many of the game’s mobs. One way that they are used is in many of Minecraft‘s mob farm designs, and they’re one of the few mobs that target and provoke Creepers. Moreover, though their snowballs do no damage to most mobs, they do harm Blazes. While Snow Golems wouldn’t typically be able to enter the Nether to make good with this ability, potions of Fire Resistance actually make them immune to the dimension’s heat, even if only temporarily.
The Snow Golem also has some aesthetic value, with a classic design that’s remained largely the same for over a decade. Their patrols around a Minecraft player’s base not only grant a dose of charm, they also spread snow as they walk, turning any home into a winter wonderland (biome permitting). Moreover, their pumpkin heads can be sheared off, revealing a goofy pebble grin underneath. Though they may be a niche mob, this level of unique game interactions is scarcely seen in modern Minecraft.
Snow Golems Should Be Made Customizable
The biome changes to other mobs in Minecraft‘s upcoming drop keep old designs while adding variation, and this would be a great pathway for Snow Golems. One way to do this would be to allow pumpkins to have more designs sheared into them, something that could potentially take advantage of banner patterns. Snowmen in real life have incredible variety, with no two snowmen in the world having the same look. Just as snowmen are designed based on what their builders have on hand, Snow Golems (in addition to more head designs) should allow players to use other objects for their head—with melons being an obvious example.
In terms of practical use, something Mojang clearly wants from Golem-type mobs given their presence in mob votes, the ability to place (and potentially replace) different types of block heads on Snow Golems could serve to imbue unique abilities. A clear example would be some sort of block, or a modified version of a pumpkin, that could imbue constant Fire Resistance. The recipe should involve Magma Cream in some way, considering its use in potions that imbue that effect. Giving Snow Golems constant fire protection would allow them to survive the Nether, making them more of a useful ally against Blazes, as well as a tool for Blaze farms.
