Space Marine 2 Dev Is Teaming Up With Hasbro For A Triple-A Game

Summary

  • A brand new Triple-A game based on a “tentpole” IP from Hasbro has been announced to be in the works.
  • The team behind last year’s Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 will be developing the game in what is being described as a “co-publishing” deal.
  • It’s unclear which IP will get the Triple-A treatment, though Hasbro has the likes of Transformers, G.I. Joe and Magic: The Gathering to pull from.

The developers behind last year’s Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 are set to collaborate with Hasbro on a brand-new Triple-A video game based on one of the brand’s “tentpole IPs.”

Who I’d Cast In The Magic: The Gathering Movie

Magic: The Gathering is headed to the big screen, and it needs a cast to match.

Hasbro, which owns the likes of Transformers and G.I. Joe, as well as Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering via Wizards of the Coast, announced the partnership in an earnings call on Thursday.

“We have many new digital collaborations in the works, but I’m especially excited to announce this one today, being a personal fan of many of this team’s games,” CEO Chris Cocks said. “Hasbro and Saber Interactive will be collaborating on an all-new video game partnership developed by the team behind 2024’s megahit, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. Combining high-octane single-player action and amazing multiplayer with Saber’s Swarm tech, this new AAA title, based on one of our tentpole IPs, is sure to be a hit.”

Per Cocks, the agreement is being categorized as a “co-publishing deal.” As relayed by Polygon, it’s unclear which of Hasbro’s “tentpole” licenses will be the subject of the game, but Cocks affirmed that the Saint Petersburg team, which was responsible for Space Marine 2, will helm the project, calling them “some of the best talent in the industry.”

The Possibilities Are Endless

While only time will tell what IP gets the Triple-A treatment, Transformers is as ripe a candidate as any of them. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Transformers: Reactive, a four-player online action game, had been canceled by Splash Damage, leaving behind a void.

With Reactivate’s cancelation, the last true Triple-A Transformers title stands as 2015s Transformers: Devastation, which has since been delisted. G.I. Joe stands as another franchise that hasn’t got its due when it comes to video games. That said, last year TheGamer reported that a game revolving around Snake Eyes was in the works, which might take it out of the running.

Of course, given the way the team navigated the lore of Warhammer, any attempt at Dungeons & Dragons or Magic: The Gathering shouldn’t be considered off the table, either. If all else fails, then gamers could expect the first Triple-A Mr. Potato Head game. We’re kidding … we hope.
