For many players, Slay the Spire is the preeminent roguelike deckbuilder, and there is no doubt that the game is among the best in the genre. However, there is certainly no shortage of great deckbuilding games, and gamers can currently snag one on Steam for its lowest-ever price. Indeed, Monster Train is temporarily discounted by 90%, making it the perfect time for fans of the genre to add developer Shiny Shoe’s acclaimed card battler to their libraries.
For those readers who may be completely unfamiliar with Monster Train, it features many of the mechanics that are central to Slay the Spire specifically and roguelike deckbuilders in general. Among those mechanics are card selection and upgrading, merchants and currencies, and items that provide passive effects, and players who have spent some time with other games in the genre should find much of what Monster Train offers quite familiar. That said, the game definitely brings its own ideas to the table, including a unique approach to combat and classes, making it an experience that even the most-seasoned fans of card battlers should consider pursuing.

Monster Train is Cheaper Than Ever on Steam
While Monster Train does an excellent job of justifying its base price, something that is made clear by its “overwhelmingly positive” reviews on Steam, some players may be hesitant to jump in for $24.99. However, the game’s current 90% discount on Steam brings it down to a new historical low of $2.49, which may be too good of a deal for some gamers to resist. Readers should not take too long deliberating about whether they should purchase Monster Train on Steam, though, as it is set to return to its base price on Wednesday, March 5.
Monster Train has been discounted by 80% several times since its release in 2020, bringing its price down to $4.99. That said, it is much more common for the card battler to receive a 70% discount and cost $7.49. It has never been as cheap as it is currently, though, and it is difficult to predict when it might be discounted so heavily again.
Readers may also want to give some thought to picking up the Monster Train DLC, The Last Divinity, as it is similarly discounted. More specifically, The Last Divinity currently costs just $1.79, with an 85% discount, which is a new historical low for the DLC. As is the case with the base game, this deal is set to end on March 5, and gamers have a little under two weeks to pursue it at the time of writing.
Monster Train’s Player Count Has Spiked
A number of gamers have obviously taken the deal already, though, as Monster Train saw a significant player count spike on Steam after the discount went live. Indeed, the game reached an average of around 400 concurrent players in the days leading up to the deal, and it is now sitting at around 3,000 players. Monster Train has not had that many players since March 2021, when the aforementioned The Last Divinity DLC was released, though it did come close in May 2022.
Monster Train is Getting a Sequel
The deep discount may not be the only thing driving renewed interest in Monster Train, though, as the start of the deal coincided with the announcement that the game will be receiving a sequel: Monster Train 2. This entry, which is set for release in 2025, looks to expand on the original game’s concepts, and it will feature new clans, abilities, card types, and more. Notably, players need not wait until Monster Train 2‘s official release to start experiencing some of these new offerings, as a demo is already available on Steam.
Monster Train 2 is certainly not the only thing for fans of roguelike deckbuilders to be excited about, as Slay the Spire 2‘s early access release is also set to begin in 2025. While it remains to be seen if that sequel is able to match the heights of its predecessor, there are undoubtedly many players who cannot wait to jump into the game and find out for themselves.
