Popular Chris Hemsworth Action Franchise Is Getting a TV Series

Netflix is bringing its hit Extraction franchise to television with an eight-episode series led by Lupin star Omar Sy, marking a major expansion of the high-octane action universe. Unlike the films, which star Chris Hemsworth as mercenary Tyler Rake, this new Netflix installment will introduce a different protagonist, a skilled mercenary on a high-stakes hostage rescue mission in Libya.

While some fans might be disappointed that Hemsworth isn’t leading the TV series, Omar Sy is no stranger to headlining global hits. He has built an impressive resume, winning the César Award for Best Actor for The Intouchables in 2012, becoming the first Black recipient of the prestigious award. The French actor then became an international Netflix sensation with Lupin, which was the most-watched non-English show on the platform upon its release. The series attracted 76 million households in its first month, cementing Sy as one of Netflix’s biggest international stars. His success continued with three acclaimed installments of Lupin, with its latest chapter achieving 50 million completed viewings by January 2024.

While this new series won’t feature Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake, it will explore new corners of the mercenary underworld, expanding the franchise’s gritty, action-packed storytelling. Set in a world of warring factions and ruthless killers, the series will not only deliver explosive action sequences but also delve deeper into the emotional struggles of its characters as they navigate trauma, betrayal, and survival. Angela Russo-Otstot, speaking on behalf of AGBO, emphasized the creative team’s commitment to crafting complex, compelling characters, stating that the show will focus on “heroic yet flawed mercenaries who illuminate universal themes.”

The Extraction franchise first exploded onto the scene in 2020, with Hemsworth starring as Tyler Rake, an Australian black ops mercenary tasked with rescuing an Indian crime lord’s kidnapped son in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, the film became a record-breaking success for Netflix, amassing 99 million household views in its first four weeks, making it the most-watched Netflix original film at the time. Its 2023 sequel, Extraction 2, further elevated the franchise, expanding Rake’s story with a mission to save a Georgian crime family. The sequel was widely praised for its ambitious action set pieces, including a jaw-dropping 21-minute single-shot action sequence that raised the bar for action filmmaking. With a third film already in development, Hemsworth is expected to return to the big screen for another high-stakes mission.
