- Overwatch 2 has finally earned the 2.
It’s hard to name a more dramatic fall from grace than Overwatch 2. What was once a genre defining game eventually evolved into a cautionary tale. While balancing issues and microtransactions were a big part of the issue, perhaps the main reason behind Overwatch 2’s lack of success was the missing PvE elements that were promised before launch.

Overwatch 2 needs a competitor, not an executioner.
Things seemed even more dire for Overwatch 2 in December last year with the launch of Marvel Rivals, which looked like it would eat its lunch. However, the devs at Blizzard persisted, continuing to support the game, despite being unable to honour many of the promises made before launch. It seems this persistence is beginning to pay off, at least in the short run.
Overwatch 2 Recent Steam Reviews Sit At ‘Mixed’
Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller was pretty up front about the competition that Marvel Rivals is giving them, saying, “There is pressure on the Overwatch team, and a lot of it is internal. It’s [asking] how do we make the best possible game that we can? And we’ve been feeling it for a while.” This is what probably prompted the team to put out the changes in the Season 15 update.
Firstly, it brought back the traditional 6v6 format, which is now here to stay. A massive overhaul has seen the introduction of a brand new perks system in matches, as well as a third-person mode like in Marvel Rivals. Also, the dreaded loot boxes are back, but Keller has insisted that we’ll be able to earn at least 100 of them without spending any money or getting dupes.
It appears that these changes have worked well with fans, as there’s been an uptick of positive reviews for Overwatch 2 on Steam, leading to the recent reviews section to rise to ‘Mixed’. Of course, the game still has a long way to go, especially after three years of disappointment.
“It seems certain rivals of Overwatch finally woke the execs up and make the ‘2’ in Overwatch 2 justified,” said one of those reviews, which pretty much encapsulates the whole situation.
